At a time when manufacturers are pumping four, six, and even 8GB of RAM into smartphones, Apple will be putting a constraint, and not go beyond the 3GB mark for its upcoming iPhone. Market intelligence firm TrendForce predicts that the anniversary edition of iPhone largely speculated to be called the iPhone 8 — will not have more than 3GB of RAM. In its detailed report, TrendForce notes that the average memory for smartphones will reach 3.2GB in 2017. This will be an increase of 33.4 percent over last year s average of 2.4GB, but a decrease from earlier estimate of 3.7GB. The price rise of mobile DRAM products is expected to hold back the growth of average per device memory content for smartphones this year, the firm notes. In addition to a low on RAM iPhone 8, the firm further predicts that fans shouldn t expect even a 4GB RAM model before 2018. The amount of RAM denotes the performance level in smartphones. It can be understood as number of people handling tasks; the higher the number, the smoother the performance expected. As TrendForce smartphone analyst Avril Wu explains, Android phones tend to become sluggish after a period of usage because of performance issues associated with the open source nature of the operating system. Hence, pumping more RAM makes for a wiser choice. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 8 detailed schematic leak yet again hints at vertical dual-camera setup, wireless charging
However, given that the DRAM prices are surging, it is expected to impact the sales of both Android manufacturers and Apple. It is worth mentioning that smartphone brands, especially those of Chinese origin, aim to pump more memory in smartphones owing to the consumer demands in their region. Newer smartphones are also being built with performance intensive AR/VR capabilities, intensifying the need for higher RAM. One of the upcoming smartphones, the Asus Zenfone AR, already packs a massive 8GB of RAM. Given that it Google Daydream-enabled smartphone, higher memory is expected to reduce instances of heating up or sluggishness.
Talking about the anniversary edition iPhone this year; Apple is speculated to introduce upgrades to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus along with a radically designed iPhone 8. According to the market intelligence firm, the iPhone 8 with OLED display will have 3GB of RAM, while the iPhone 7s is expected to come with 2GB of RAM. The tight supply situation in the mobile DRAM market is also likely to impact Apple shipments. It is already rumoured that the iPhone maker will be facing delayed shipment issues owing to shortage of supplies and Wu s estimates appear to back the report. At the same time, it is also expected that the new iPhone 8 will also be the most expensive iPhone ever built, which again, appears to justify the high costs involved in DRAM.
