Apple iPhone 9 to house L-shaped battery supplied by LG: Report

LG is likely to be the sole supplier of future iPhone's batteries.

We are yet to see the official specifications of this year’s iPhone 8, but if the latest reports are anything to go by, the future iPhone 9 will come powered with more battery capacity without losing its thinness. Until now, Apple has a multi-vendor approach when it comes to sourcing components such as the battery for its smartphones. However, for the future iteration of its iPhone, the company will reportedly use batteries supplied exclusively by LG.

According to a report from The Korea Economic Daily, LG has stepped up its investments in its battery production facilities to match up to Apple’s demands. “LG has invested hundred of billions of Korean won for related facilities and plans to start mass production from early next year,” a source in the chemical industry is quoted as saying in the report.

Apple has reportedly reached an agreement with LG Chemical – the battery unit for LG – to supply batteries for the iPhone 9, which is likely to make its debut in 2018. If the report is to be believed, the iPhone 9 will house a L-shaped battery – a feature which is also rumored for the upcoming iPhone 8. The L-shaped batteries enable manufacturers to put more power without thickening up the device. Furthermore, such a battery design also allows for faster charging. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 8 final design leaked

The source further revealed that LG has invested hundreds of billions of won in dedicated facilities and plans to full-scale mass production from early next year. The company has also decided to supply all batteries for the iPhone 9 to be released in the second half of next year, which means LG will be the sole supplier of the batteries. As of now, Apple is known to source the batteries for its iPhone from Samsung SDI, China ATL, Murata Manufacturing Co., other than LG Chemical. However, rest of the suppliers are known for manufacturing batteries which are rectangular-shaped, unlike LG which has worked on producing L-shaped batteries.

In addition to adding fast charging capabilities and allowing for a thinner overall device design, the L-shaped batteries, which are bent to the right at the bottom, also leverage the space on the bottom right of the iPhone which has evolved from the development of electronic component integration technology. ALSO READ: Apple to bring AR features to FaceTime in iPhone 8: Report

Even as it is too early for the iPhone 9 rumors to be believed, some reports indicate that Apple could introduce two new OLED screen sizes with the future smartphone. These would measure 5.28-inch and 6.46-inch. While the iPhone 9 is not expected to show up in renders or otherwise anytime before the end of this year, the company is preparing for the mega launch of its iPhone 8 – the 10th anniversary edition iPhone which is expected to boast a number of new features including an OLED display, glass sandwich design and 3D facial recognition technology.
