Apple is expected to launch its low-cost entry-level iPhone this month. Ahead of the launch, the iPhone maker has inadvertently confirmed the name. Verizon has also tipped the name for this upcoming iPhone model. The low-cost iPhone is now expected to debut as iPhone SE. Earlier, reports claimed that it will be called iPhone 9. However, Apple seems to be preparing a successor to iPhone SE. This particular iPhone is expected to be aimed at consumers in the emerging markets. For many, this could become their very first iPhone as well. Also Read - Apple's 2020 entry-level iPhone will be called iPhone SE: Expected launch date and price
Apple iPhone SE: Expected Price and Specifications
If the leaks so far are anything to go by then we are looking at a budget device. It is tipped to debut with a design similar to that of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 series. The iPhone SE 2020 is expected to feature a 4.7-inch Retina HD display similar to iPhone 8. However, it is expected to be built with a metal chassis as opposed to glass back seen on the iPhone 8 series. This also means the device will lack the wireless charging support. This should not be a deal breaker for consumers looking at an affordable iPhone. The iPhone SE 2020 is also rumored to use the same Apple A13 Bionic chip seen on the iPhone 11 series. This would make the entry-level iPhone, one of the most powerful smartphones in the market. Apple might offer lower RAM and 64GB storage for the base model to keep the cost low. It is also likely to feature a single rear camera module like the iPhone XR. Also Read - iPhone 9: Apple's iPhone SE successor likely to launch on March 31
The leaks so far have also revealed that the iPhone SE 2020 will feature a Touch ID button. The original iPhone SE, launched in March 2016, was essentially an iPhone 5s with new internals. The iPhone SE 2020 seems to use iPhone 11’s internals inside an iPhone 7 form factor and design. It is tipped to start at $399 when it becomes official this month. There is a rumor that Apple will introduce the device on April 15.
Should you wait for the iPhone SE?
Apple’s current iPhone lineup starts with the iPhone 8 series in the United States. The iPhone 8 series starts at $449 followed by iPhone XR at $599, iPhone 11 at $699 and iPhone 11 Pro at $999. At $399, the iPhone SE 2020 will drive a lot of existing iPhone 6s or iPhone 7 owners to upgrade. If you are planning for a low-cost iPhone then you should certainly wait. The real selling point of iPhone SE 2020 won’t be its familiar design but rather the powerful hardware.
