Late last night, Apple sent invites to its ‘Let us Loop you in’ event scheduled for March 21. Apple is expected to unveil the much-rumored 4-inch iPhone SE, a 9.7-inch iPad Pro, and some new Apple Watch bands. The limelight will no doubt be hogged by the small screened iPhone, which has been on the rumor mills for quite some time now. With the announcement of the event date, let’s take a look at everything we know about the upcoming Apple iPhone SE. Name: There have been quite a few rumors around what Apple’s small screened iPhone will be called. There were speculations around names like iPhone 6c, which would make it the ideal successor to the iPhone 5c. Other names like the iPhone 5se was also reported about, but this upcoming iPhone is most likely to be called ‘iPhone SE’. The SE in the nomenclature is said to stand for Special Edition. Looks: As per reports, the iPhone SE will borrow design elements from the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6 family. It is expected to look like the iPhone 5s, but with curvier edges similar to what we see on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s.
Because of the small size, the power button will be at the top, but some reports also hint at the power button being placed on the right. The volume rocker and mute switch will continue to be on the sides. It is also expected to be available in the same color variants as the iPhone 6s — gold, silver, space gray and rose gold.
Specifications and features: One of the talking points will be the 4-inch Retina Display, but unlike the new iPhone 6s, it won’t boast the 3D Touch display technology. Under the hood, Apple is believed to be opting for variants of the A9 processor found on the current-gen iPhones. This processor is up to 70 percent faster than the A8 processor found on the iPhone 6.
The iPhone SE will also include variants of the M9 co-processor, which supports the always-on ‘Hey Siri’ feature. While details about the RAM are scarce, Apple is expected to opt for 1GB of RAM. On the photography front, the iPhone SE could come with an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime camera up front, the same combination seen on the iPhone 6.
As for storage, the base model will continue to be the 16GB variant, and there is also likely to be a 64GB variant. Another feature differentiating the upcoming iPhone SE from the iPhone 5s is the support for NFC. This feature is important to use the iPhone for Apple Pay.
Price: While it is being touted as an affordable iPhone, don’t expect it to be priced close to budget Android smartphones. Rumors say that the starting price could be somewhere between $399 and $499 (Rs 26,700 and Rs 33,400 approximately).
Availability: The iPhone SE is expected to go on sale as early as March 25 in select markets including US and China. The interesting thing to see would be how soon Apple brings the affordable iPhone SE to India, a market which it considers to be of utmost importance.
