Apple announced record profits during the first three months of 2018 with CEO Tim Cook claiming Apple iPhone was the bestseller in most markets. Now, Strategy Analytics confirms that iPhone X was the best-selling smartphone model in the first quarter of 2018.

In a new analyst report, Strategy Analytics says Apple sold 16 million units of iPhone X during the quarter, making it the best selling smartphone model during the first quarter. The iPhone X was followed by the iPhone 8 with 12.5 million units sold during the quarter. The third most popular smartphone was the iPhone 8 Plus with shipments in the tune of 8.3 million units. During the earnings call, Apple confirmed that it 52 million iPhones during the quarter but did not divulge shipment details of individual models.

The report from Strategy Analytics contradicts analyst reports over the past few weeks that iPhone X is not getting huge demand from consumers and Apple is even planning to curb production of the device altogether. However, the iPhones continue to remain the best-selling smartphone models with the iPhone 7 taking the fourth spot with 5.6 million units sold during the quarter.

Xiaomi’s entry-level Redmi 5A took the fifth spot with sales crossing 5.4 million units during the three month period. The six best smartphone in terms of sales was the Galaxy S9, which was launched in late February and went on sale in March. The top-six most popular smartphone models together accounted for 1 in 7 of all smartphones shipped during the quarter.

While all seems well with Apple and demand for iPhone X, the overall smartphone market does not seem to be doing that well after all. According to Strategy Analytics, the global smartphone shipments reached 345 million units during the first quarter. The smartphone market contracted by 2 percent from the same period last year.

According to IDC, the worldwide smartphone market declined 3.9 percent during the first quarter of 2018. It estimates a total of 334.3 million units shipped during the quarter when compared to 344.4 million units shipped during the same period last year. The decline was mainly led by tepid demand in China while the smartphone sales remained flat in India.
