Apple has once again increased the price of all iPhone models except iPhone SE in India. The new hike in price comes just weeks after the company increased prices due to increase in customs duty and the new prices will be effective starting today. On Thursday, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced increase in customs duty for imported mobile phones from 15 percent to 20 percent. Since that announcement, it was anticipated that Apple will increase prices of its iPhone models in the country. Apple currently manufactures only the iPhone SE in India and its reportedly planning to start manufacturing iPhone 6s locally as well. Apple iPhones are already available at a steep price over its retail price in the US and with the hike, the much sought after devices will be more difficult to reach for average Indians. Here is how much the iPhones will cost in India starting February 5, 2018.
Apple iPhone X starts at Rs 95,390
Apple iPhone X was launched in India at a starting price of Rs 89,000 and its price was increased to Rs 92,430 after government increased customs duty to 15 percent in December last year. With the hike in import duty, the iPhone X starts at Rs 95,390 for the 64GB variant, a 7 percent premium over its November launch price. The iPhone X variant with 256GB storage is priced at Rs 1,08,930, a hike of 3.2 percent over its previous retail price of Rs 1,05,720.
The iPhone X is the best iPhone yet and one of the best flagship smartphone that money can buy. It features a new 5.8-inch edge-to-edge OLED display and ditches the Touch ID for Face ID facial recognition system. It also gets stainless steel and glass sandwich design with support for wireless charging, Apple A11 Bionic chipset and a larger L-shaped battery.
The iPhone X also sports dual 12-megapixel optically stabilized rear camera with one of them supporting 2x optical zoom. The front camera has been updated to support Portrait Lighting mode and new Animoji feature.
Apple iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus now starts at Rs 67,940
Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, the two iterative iPhone models have also received a price hike in India. Apple iPhone 8, the smaller of the two models, is now available at a starting price of Rs 67,940 for the 64GB version, up from the revised price of Rs 66,120 announced in December. The 256GB variant is priced at Rs 81,500, up from its older retail price of Rs 79,420. To recall, the iPhone 8 was launched in India at a starting price of Rs 64,000.
The larger iPhone 8 Plus now starts at Rs 77,560 for the 64GB variant and Rs 91,110 for the 256GB model. Both the variants were previously retailing for Rs 75,450 and Rs 88,750, respectively. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus feature metal and glass design to support wireless charging and are powered by A11 Bionic chipset found on iPhone X.
Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus now starts at Rs 52,370
The prices of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the flagship smartphones from 2016 have also been hiked in India. The iPhone 7 now starts at Rs 52,370 for the 32GB variant and Rs 61,560 for the 128GB storage model. The iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 62,840 for the 32GB model while the 128GB storage variant will retail for Rs 72,060.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were previously available at a starting price of Rs 49,999 and Rs 61,060, respectively. The Cupertino-based company is introducing a price hike of nearly 3.1 percent on iPhone 7 models.
Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus now starts at Rs 42,900
Apple iPhone 6s will be available at a starting price of Rs 42,900 for the 32GB variant while the 128GB model will retail for Rs 52,100. The iPhone 6s Plus is priced at Rs 52,240 for the 32GB model while the 128GB model will retail for Rs 61,450. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are more than three years old and could be available at a cheaper price once Apple starts assembling them locally in India.
Apple iPhone 6 now starts at Rs 31,900
Apple iPhone 6, the first iPhone to get a larger 4.7-inch display is now priced at Rs 31,900, up from its older retail price of Rs 30,780. The iPhone 6 was originally launched in 2014 and is not listed on company’s India website.
Apple Watch Series 3 price hiked in India
Apple Watch Series 3 is also getting a price hike in India and will now cost Rs 32,380 for the GPS-only model with 38mm watchface. The price has been increased for its previous retail price of Rs 29,900. The 42mm model is now priced at Rs 34,410, up from earlier price of Rs 31,900.
Apple iPhone SE, which has become a surprise hit for the company in India, will be available at the same price. The 4-inch iPhone SE is priced at Rs 26,000 for the 32GB variant and Rs 35,000 for the 128GB model. It needs to be noted that iPhone SE is available at attractive discount on various e-commerce platforms.
Apple recently announced its first quarter earnings for fiscal 2018 with decline in sales, but record profits due to strong sales of iPhone X driving the average selling price of iPhone to $796. The company also confirmed that it has $285 billion in cash and derivatives for future investment. It announced double-digit growth in India sales, but the company did not make any special mention of India or its plans for future expansion in the second largest smartphone market.
Apple is reportedly seeking benefits from the government to set up its own retail stores and start local manufacturing in partnership with Foxconn. Bloomberg reports that the iPhone maker is seeking 15 years tax holiday and the government is yet to confirm its demands. While iPhones have historically been priced high in India, the revised price makes them too expensive for what they offer.
