Testing agency Consumer Reports is back with its new list of ‘Best Smartphone Cameras’ and we have a reason to worry. If a list of ten smartphones puts six devices from Apple alone, questions are bound to be asked. The agency not only puts the Apple iPhone X at the top of the list, even as the Samsung Galaxy S9 series with variable apertures has released, it awards the first three spots to Apple.

The company is sometimes accused of being unfairly anti-Apple, but its latest reports put to question the credibility of the tests performed. Informed users always do a check with such reviews and testing agencies before buying products, but if the iPhone 8 with a single camera is better than the iPhone 8 Plus with a dual-camera according to the rating, then Apple also needs to realign its strategy of naming products.

Top 10 smartphones for camera quality

According to the list, the top ten smartphones with the best camera quality are:

Apple iPhone X

Apple iPhone 8

Apple iPhone 8 Plus

Samsung Galaxy S8+

Apple iPhone 7

Apple iPhone 6s Plus

Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Apple iPhone 7 Plus

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active

It is to be noted that these smartphones are among the agency’s top overall performers in their smartphone ratings. As 9to5 Mac reports, Consumer Reports stated that all of these phones did well in its still-image quality tests which evaluate resolution, dynamic range, color accuracy, and visual noise.

The iPhone X and the iPhone 8 were ranked ‘excellent’ for their video quality. To recall, the iPhone X is equipped with exactly the same dual-camera module as the iPhone 8 Plus, which includes a pair of 12-megapixel wide-angle and telephoto sensors with optical image stabilization for video, optical zoom, and digital zoom up to 6x. Both allow 4K video recording at 24 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps, 1080p HD recording at 30 fps/60 fps, and slow-motion video support for 1080p at 120fps/240fps. In comparison, the iPhone 8 is equipped with a single 12-megapixel rear camera with same video recording capabilities but offers digital zoom up to 3x.

Samsung’s older Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and the S8 Active also received ‘very good’ ratings but did not do well enough to beat the Apple trio. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are equipped with Dual Pixel 12-megapixel rear camera with Auto Focus and OIS with f/1.7 aperture. It comes with 8X digital zoom, which is higher than both the iPhone X and iPhone 8. It further allows 4K video recording at 30 fps, 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps, and 720p HD video recording at 30 fps.
