In what could come as a huge surprise, Apple’s anniversary edition iPhone X could reach its ‘end of life’ as early as this year itself. Though it was launched only a few months ago, demand for the smartphone remains below expectations. Noted analyst Ming Chi-Kuo claims that Apple will instead focus on launching two new iPhones with a similar design – one featuring a 6.5-inch OLED display, and other featuring 6.1-inch LCD display.

Apart from low demand, Kuo also claims that offering the Apple iPhone X at a discount this year is likely to eat into the sales of this year’s upcoming iPhones. If discontinued, this would be the first time a new iPhone won’t be available at a discounted price once new iPhones are introduced.

In his note, shared by Macrumors, Kuo says, “iPhone X would hurt product brand value and lineup of 2H18 new models if it continues to sell at a lower price after 2H18 new models launch: Lowering iPhone X’s price after the 2H18 new models launch would be a negative to product brand value given 3D sensing and OLED display are features of the new high-price model. Additionally, to sell iPhone X at a lower price may have a negative impact on shipments of the new 6.1″ LCD iPhone in 2H18. Thus, we estimate iPhone X will reach end-of-life (EOL) around the middle of 2018.”

Kuo’s note adds that the iPhone X hasn’t quite set sales charts on fire. In countries like China, Apple’s anniversary edition iPhone hasn’t been quite successful, and there’s a belief that the notch could be among the primary reasons. This is also reflected in the US. A recent Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) claimed that the iPhone 8 sold better than the iPhone X in the US. Per the report, iPhone X sales accounted for 20 percent of all iPhone sales in Q4 2017, while the two iPhone 8 models accounted for 41 percent.

Going forward, Kuo claims that Apple will launch three new iPhones this year. All three will boast an iPhone X-like full-screen display design. But he adds that two premium models will come with OLED screens, while the budget model will come with an LCD screen. It is unclear if Apple will retain the Touch ID sensor, or drop it in favor of Face ID. There have also been quite a few rumors around Apple working on the second-generation iPhone SE. Dubbed iPhone SE 2, this smartphone is rumored to feature a bigger 6.1-inch display, A10 chipset, and wireless charging capabilities.

In the meanwhile, if you are planning on buying the iPhone X in India, e-commerce sites are offering interesting discounts on the flagship device. On Amazon India, the iPhone Space Grey (64GB variant) is available for Rs 84,999 – down from Rs 89,000. You can get further discounts by using specific cards, and exchanging older devices.
