Apple is extending its ‘Apple Care’ from devices to its employees. The iPhone maker has published a website and job listings for a health care system catering to its employees.
Called AC Wellness, the health care system will have two clinics, one located inside the Cupertino campus and another one located outside the campus. The website for AC Wellness includes information about the initiative and a careers page with job listings including primary care doctor, exercise coach and care navigator. The listing also includes opening for Phlebotomist, who will administer lab tests on-site.
According to CNBC, the AC Wellness will include a group of clinical staff that will run independently from Apple, but will be dedicated to Apple employees. The job listing for the network details “multiple, stunning state-of-the-art medical centers,” a language used only by Apple to describe its initiatives and products.
Apple has even hired former Stanford Health Care employees to support its AC Wellness initiative. LinkedIn search reveals that these people have been associated with the program for at least five months but there is no mention of Apple on the profile of these people. The news about Apple stepping into healthcare comes just as Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and J.P. Morgan announced a joint effort to improve health care for their employees.
Healthcare remains a fundamental subject among employers and employees in the US and its significance has gained momentum from the administration’s decision to repeal Obamacare. Apple is also hiring designers to help implement a program that will focus on preventing disease and promote healthy behavior among its employees. The job listing shows that it is looking for a population health designer and clinical program design lead.
It is no secret that Apple wants to be a major player in the health and fitness segment. The company has added number of fitness-centric features to its Apple Watch that have become resounding success among its customers. CNBC notes that Apple will leverage its medical clinics to test its range of health services and products.
Apple is currently working with Stanford to study if Apple Watch can detect irregularities with heart’s rhythm. It is also said to be working on project to add glucose monitoring to the watch and recently added bands capable of measuring EKG and blood pressure. Apple is estimated to have more than $250 billion in cash reserve and it has been expected to use the money to support its employee with new benefits. The new health care system could well be the start to such an effort.
