Apple lets suppliers reduce accuracy of Face ID to hasten iPhone X production

Apple’s new Face ID feature has already been criticized for the surveillance issues it has the potential to cause.

Since before Apple iPhone X was actually launched, analysts have been pointing out at the possibility of delay in production of the device. Even after launch, the reports of delay only became firmer. It was evident that production problems meant Apple wouldn t have enough iPhone X units in time for the sales. But, while analysts were predicting delays, Apple found a solution to this and quietly gave suppliers a green flag to reduce the accuracy of the Face ID feature to make it easier to manufacture, reported Bloomberg. The Face ID feature in iPhone X has already ticked off security enthusiasts who reckon that this is a feature ripe for misuse. While it is superbly designed, it is also slightly unconvincing, and creepy. At the time of the iPhone X launch, even Edward Snowden said that while Face ID has a robust design , it normalizes facial scanning, a tech certain to be abused . And now with the alleged reduced accuracy, the concerns around security are only going to grow. Also Read - 5G on iPhone SE? We are fine, as long as Apple upgrades the basics to 2022 spec

Essentially, Face ID doesn t give you the security of a fingerprint scanner or a security code, which are widely used. It raises concerns around surveillance and user privacy. For instance, if a cop arrests you unlawfully or if criminals attack you, they can point your iPhone towards your face and unlock it. With a passcode or a fingerprint scanner, it is never that easy. Face ID is Apple s new secure authentication feature on iPhone X, which replaces the previously present Touch ID feature for authentication. Face ID basically integrates a dedicated TrueDepth camera. The setup includes a dot projector, which projects and analyzes more than 30,000 invisible dots for creating a depth map of a user s face, and an infrared camera to read the dotted pattern. There is also a flood illuminator that helps the infrared light identify your face, even in the dark. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone X Face ID feature raises concerns around privacy and surveillance

Not long ago, reputed analyst Ming Chi Kuo predicted that only 2-3 million units of the iPhone X will be shipped for its first sale. He claims that Apple is facing supply shortages for more components of the iPhone X, which include circuit boards, antennae, and wide-angle camera sensors, in addition to the depth-sensing infrared dot projector. The iPhone X boasts a lot of firsts for Apple with a bezel-less and edge-to-edge display design. Similarly, many components are also redesigned leading to supply shortages. Kuo further highlights that Apple s biggest obstacle in shipping the iPhone X will be the circuit board for the antenna system, which requires specific processes and tests to be done before production. For the November 3 launch, pre-orders will begin on October 27. It was recently reported that Foxconn has started shipping the first batch of iPhone X units to UAE and Europe, which includes a total of 46,500 units of the iPhone X, which are comparatively low to previous year s shipments. With many speculations suggesting shipping delays for the iPhone X, a widely accepted prediction is 40 million units of the iPhone X by 2017-end. Apple is expected to achieve a balance of supply and demand by early 2018. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone X buyers reportedly interested in the most expensive 256GB variant

For that matter, the sales of the iPhone X are also being questioned. A recent survey conducted by Bernstein claimed that demand for the iPhone X will be large, but not mind blowing. The survey included 1,112 current iPhone owners, 48 percent of respondents said that they were excited for the iPhone X but only 25 percent said they were planning on buying it. The excitement surrounding the iPhone X appears to be magnitudes higher than actual purchase intent, the survey results read.

However, in contrast to that analysis, some have also been drawing assumption that demand for the iPhone X will be through the roof. Reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo anticipates that the iPhone X may help Apple sell more iPhones in 2018 than ever before.
