Apple has just revealed some new information about the T2 security chip and the new security measures that the company has added in its new lineup of products. The company recently launched the much-anticipated refresh for the Apple MacBook Air. One of the highlights for the device was the the dedicated T2 security chip, which is responsible for handling the most sensitive tasks, including authentication. To clarify, it will take care of storage encryption, secure boot, Touch ID, and even Hey Siri. Though, according to the official Apple T2 document, the company has added something called as Hardware microphone disconnect . According to the document, Apple claims that all Mac portable devices to feature the T2 chip will disconnect the microphone on a hardware level whenever the lid is closed. The mechanism is purely hardware, which means that no amount of software privileges can prevent it. This will prevent any hacker from snooping in and listen in on your conversations when with the laptop lid is closed. However, according to a report by Hacker News, this feature is not available on the MacBook Pro that were launched earlier this year despite the presence of the T2 chip. The reason for this is that the hardware disconnection feature was likely not ready for the prime time back then.

As pointed by the report, this feature looks good but it may not help much in the real world when the lid is open.
