Apple is expected to launch its updated MacBook Air at the end of third quarter. According to a TrendForce report, Apple might release a new MacBook Air during third quarter, either in September or October.

While the report does not provide additional details, former KGI Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg report that Apple is planning to launch an entry-level laptop with latest Intel Core CPU during the second half of 2018. There is a possibility that new MacBook Air will come out alongside the new iPhones slated to launch in September. The report from TrendForce uses a weird timeline and even refers to the MacBook Pro launched in July in future tense.

“The second quarter was the transition period when Apple was preparing for the releases of the upcoming new MacBook devices for the year. TrendForce therefore expects MacBook shipments to again post a large QoQ increase in 3Q18, as Apple will be releasing a new MacBook Pro at the start of the quarter and a new MacBook Air at the end of the quarter,” the report reads.

While Kuo and Bloomberg believe that Apple is working on a new entry-level notebook, TrendForce specifically calls this device as refreshed MacBook Air. There have been multiple reports of Apple working on a refreshed MacBook Air in the past, and its biggest USP is rumored to be Retina display and Intel Kaby Lake chipset.

Digitimes had previously reported that Apple will release the first MacBook Air with a Retina display during the second half of 2018. The report mentioned that the model will feature a 13-inch display and added that Quanta will build the cheaper notebook in the fourth quarter.

Mark Gurman had previously reported for Bloomberg News that the company is working on at least one entry-level notebook this year. Whether it is called MacBook, MacBook Air or something else remains unknown, but Gurman believes it will start at $999 or less in the United States.

Apple has not updated the MacBook Air substantially for over three years now. Apple recently discontinued the 11-inch model and issued a minor update for the MacBook Air with a bump in clock speed. It remains outdated when compared with similar notebooks running Windows operating system since the machine is still stuck in the times of a broadwell CPU.

Apple’s focus has been around performance machines over the past few years but MacBook Air sales has forced the company to continue selling them. It seems obvious for the company to refresh the machine instead of selling the older model. It is not clear whether Apple will launch the machine at fall event in September or might instead launch with a low-key announcement in September or October. Apple is also said to be working on a completely redesigned Mac Pro that will support modular components.
