Despite speculations of Apple being on its way to becoming world s first trillion dollar company, the sale proportions of the tech giant haven t exactly been ideal. While the iPhones have been seeing their own share of ups and downs, Apple iPads have witnessed declining sales for some years now. However, this year turned out well for the new iPad lineup, with finally seeing a return to growth. And now, looking to build on this upward graph, Apple is reportedly mulling over releasing a more affordable version of its current 9.7-inch iPad model in 2018. According to a report by Digitimes, Apple may release an iPad next year, which would be about $70 (Rs 4,500 approximately) cheaper than the current model which retails for $329. The starting price of the current 9.7-inch iPad model is Rs 28,900 in India. Which means, if the report is true, we can expect the 2018 9.7-inch iPad to cost about Rs 24,000. The Digitimes report notes, The device should be able to attract more demand from price-oriented consumers, allowing Apple to maintain its present 10 million-unit tablet shipments a quarter.
The report further points out that, Apple is also looking to expand the inexpensive iPad into the industrial and service sectors .
This year s Apple 9.7-inch iPad comes in two variants Wi-Fi only variant, which is priced at Rs 28,900, while the Wi-Fi+Cellular variant that is priced at Rs 39,990. Design-wise the 9.7-inch iPad looks almost identical to the iPad Air 2, except it is slightly thicker at 7.5mm, as opposed to the 6.1mm thickness of the latter. Weighing in at 469 grams, the new tablet is also a tad heavier than the 437 grams iPad Air 2.
As far as specifications are concerned, the new 9.7-inch iPad is powered by a newer 64-bit A9 chipset. The processor is paired with M9 motion co-processor, and 2GB of RAM. There are two storage options on offer 32GB base storage, and the top-end model featuring 128GB storage.
