Apple might be working on 2 new iPad models, reveals Eurasian database

Apple's updated iPads might arrive sooner than later as the devices have been listed in Eurasian database.

Apple has been rumored to launch new iPad with edge-to-edge display, and Face ID like iPhone X this year. While the official launch details are not known just yet, the company has registered few devices with the Eurasian commission database earlier this week. As discovered by Consomac, Apple has registered two devices with model identifiers A1954 and A1893, which have been described as tablets running iOS 11. The listing suggests that new iPads are coming soon, and might be announced at WWDC 2018, expected to be held in first week of June. It is mandatory for any device that uses encryption to be registered ahead of their release and in the past, similar registrations have tipped details of new MacBooks, the iPhone 7 and AirPods. A major update for the iPad is incoming, and it will mostly draw features first seen on the iPhone X. The new iPads are also expected to ditch the home button in favor of Face ID authentication. But the database does not seem to refer to these changes. The new iPad with Face ID is said to arrive only in the second half of 2018, while the Eurasian filing indicate that new iPads will arrive much sooner.

The iPhone 7 and AirPods first appeared in regulatory filings just a fortnight before the official announcement, while MacBook and new keyboards appeared on the Eurasian database in May and were unveiled at WWDC in June. There is a possibility that the two new models seen on Eurasian database could be the successor to 9.7-inch iPad without Face ID or even cheaper variants.

Apple launched the updated iPad lineup in March last year at a starting price of $329, and the timing might be right for its refresh. The identifiers for two models could refer to the Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi+Cellular models. Digitimes had previously claimed that Apple is planning an even cheaper $260 iPad in 2018, and plans to launch it in the second quarter.

Consomac adds that Apple will hold a media event in March to introduce the new iPad, which is strange considering the updated iPads were announced via a press release last year. Apple is unlikely to host an event with fanfare for an iPad that will mostly be iterative and lack features like bezel-less design or facial recognition.
