Apple will reportedly launch a new color variant of its iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus smartphones later today. The smartphones are said to arrive in red color as part of company’s partnership with (RED), an advocacy group working to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa. The details of the purported launch is based on an internal memo from Virgin Mobile. According to MacRumors, the memo internally distributed to Virgin Mobile employees details Apple will announce the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models in a limited edition (PRODUCT) RED color on Monday, April 9. The memo also adds that Virgin Mobile will add the new smartphone models to its inventory system today further confirming the smartphone will be immediately available for pre-order. However, there is no confirmation whether a (PRODUCT) RED version of the iPhone X will also be launched by Apple. Apple unveiled a (PRODUCT) RED version of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in March last year and the launch of this year’s edition may have been pushed to April in order to reflect the sales figure entirely in its third quarter earnings result. Apple has been rumored to be introducing new color versions of its iPhone 8 and iPhone X models to fuel the growth in sales. For Apple, the third quarter is generally the lean period where sales are lower than usual. The red-colored iPhones have been rumored for sometime and Rosenblatt Securities analyst Jun Zhang and Steve Hemmerstoffer, who goes by the name of OnLeaks on Twitter, have detailed Apple’s plan to launch a red edition of newer iPhones. Mark Gurman, a reliable source for Apple product announcements also corroborated the information.
The PRODUCT RED brand was founded by U2’s Bono along with Bobby Shiver of the ONE Campaign in 2006. It licenses its name to other private companies to highlight their efforts to combact HIV/AIDS in eight African countries: Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania and Zambia. As part of the initiative, up to 50 percent of the profits gained by each partner is donated to the Global Fund.

Apple is also said to be working on a gold iPhone X, which is not detailed in the Virgin Mobile memo. There is a possibility that Apple will make a soft launch of the (PRODUCT) RED iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus along with the gold iPhone X and its AirPower charging mat.
