Apple has released iOS 15.4 and iPad iPadOS 15.4 to the compatible iPhones and iPads. The latest update brings tons of new features to the Apple devices, which includes new emojis, new Siri features and vaccine cards among other things. But the most feature that Apple has rolled out is the ability to unlock iPhones and iPads using FaceID even while wearing a mask. Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic made wearing masks compulsory, Apple device owners have been asking the company to devise a way of using FaceID without removing the face mask. Now, almost two years later, the company has finally rolled out the update that lets Apple device users do just that, that is, unlock their iPhones and iPad using FaceID. But there is a catch. Not all iPhone users will be able to benefit from this update. In its release notes, Apple has said that ‘iOS 15.4 adds the ability to unlock with Face ID while wearing a mask on iPhone 12 and newer.’ This means that if you are using an older iPhone model such as the iPhone X, the iPhone XR or the iPhone 11 series, you will have to either remove your face mask or punch in the pass code to unlock your Apple device. Not just unlocking the iPhone, with the iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 update, Apple users will also be able to use FaceID while using Apple Pay, Safari and while auto-filling passwords in apps.
In addition to this, the iOS 15.4 update also brings new emoji faces such as hand gestures, and household objects. Apple says that the handshake emoji now allows users to choose separate skin tones for each hand.
Apple has also released updates to its virtual assistant, Siri, which includes the ability to provide time and date information while offline on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 or newer devices and inclusion of a new voice for more inclusivity. Additionally, the company has added episode filters for seasons, played, unplayed, saved, or downloaded episodes in its Podcasts app, support for adding, removing, or querying tags with Reminders in Shortcuts and the ability to add saved passwords in notes in the Settings app.
Apple has also updated Emergency SOS settings such that they use Call with Hold for all users. “Call with 5 Presses is still available as an option in Emergency SOS settings,” the company. The company has also released bug fixes for Keyboard, News widgets, Photos and Live Listen functionality in the Control Centre.
