If rumors and leaks over the past few months are to believed, Apple is planning on launching as many as three iPhones this year — iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus and iPhone 8. After all, Apple is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its iPhone this year. The company is expected to go all out to make sure its new iPhones are an instant hit. But that will also require Apple to have enough inventory to ensure there s a quick and wider adoption. According to a new report, the company is eyeing a 100 million iPhones target. According to DigiTimes, Apple has increased the orders as compared to last year and is targeting 50 million units per quarter during the second half of the calendar year. The calculation of 100 million units is based on the chip suppliers reported stocking of chips for the production of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7s. The publication names ADI, Broadcom, Cirrus Logic, Cypress, NXP, Qualcomm, STMicroelectronics, TSMC, and TI as the key suppliers. Chip demand for Apple’s upcoming iPhone series will exceed 50 million sets per quarter during the second half of 2017, said the sources, adding that unit sales of the new iPhone are forecast to reach a total of 220-230 million units, reports DigiTimes. It is worth noting that Apple s 220-230 million units target is just for the smartphones it will launch in 2017. If the report stands true, Apple seems to be quite ambitious as rival Samsung has reportedly pegged sales of its Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ devices at just 60 million. Well, whether Apple will be able to trigger that euphoria around the new-generation iPhones, is something we will have to wait and find out. Another important thing that the report highlights is TSMC is going to fabricate Apple s latest A11 processor for upcoming iPhones, which is speculated to be launched in September. “The pure-play foundry said previously it will ramp up production of 10nm products in the second half of 2017, and expects the node to account for about 10 percent of its total wafer sales during the six-month period, the report further said.
Based on leaks thus far, Apple s new generation iPhones are worth watching out for. While a recent report hinted at rear-facing fingerprint scanner, earlier reports have said that the Apple 2017 smartphones will have the fingerprint scanner embedded under the display.
