Apple s theme for this year s iPhones has been bigger than big, but it seems the Cupertino-based giant is taking a step back next year. The folks at AppleInsider have posted a research note by Cowen and Company analyst Timothy Arcuri, who claims that Apple will release an iPhone 6S mini next year, alongside the updated versions of the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone models. According to the note, the iPhone 6S mini will feature a 4-inch display similar to the iPhone 5S. But the design language will be different to last year s flagship device, and instead the smartphone will look similar to the iPhone 6 with curved screen edges. This report is in line with Chinese publication Feng s report earlier this year, which too claimed that Apple is working on a 4-inch iPhone. Acuri s note further claims that the forthcoming smartphone may include “purpose-built low cost components” from Qualcomm to keep the price down. If the claims do become a reality, the iPhone 6S mini could end up replacing the iPhone 5C. This too would be in line with reports claiming that Apple is likely to discontinue the plastic iPhone 5C next year. While the iPhone 5C never really picked up, one of the reasons to discontinue the plastic iPhone is likely to be the absence of a TouchID sensor.
The publication has however warned that Acuri has a mixed track record when it comes to leaking Apple-related news, and hence suggests we take this news with the proverbial pinch of salt.
