Apple rolled out its biggest software update , iOS 10, just last month. With the update, one major step was Apple welcoming more third party developers. Along with this, Apple also introduced more interactive notification cards and customizable widgets. Weeks after the rollout of iOS 10, Apple has now started rolling out iOS 10.1 update to all iOS 10 users. With the iOS 10.1 update, iPhone 7 Plus users can now use the much anticipated and talked about Portrait mode feature. It is worth pointing out here that feature is currently in beta mode, and is likely to get a final update in coming weeks. Apple s Portrait Mode is only available for the iPhone 7 Plus as it uses the dual-camera setup. The feature is located between Photo and Square modes in the camera app. Apple says its dual-camera uses an advanced machine learning letting Portrait mode to apply a depth of field effect to make the foreground subject sharper with a blurred background. The bokeh effect aims to replicate what DSLR cameras deliver. The mode uses the wide-angle lens and telephoto lens to achieve the effect. Apple promises further enhancements for the Portrait mode in future iOS updates. The dual-camera setup in the iPhone 7 Plus includes a set of two 12-megapixels wide-angle cameras with f/1.8 aperture, PDAF, 2X optical zoom, OIS, quad-LED (dual tone) flash, and a whole bunch of added features.
The iOS 10.1 update also brings with it a good number of bug fixes and improvements. In the photography department, the iOS 10.1 update fixes problems like improving the display of wide color gamut photos in the grid views of the Photos app. The Camera app which initially showed a blurred or flashing screen for some users has been fixed with the iOS 10.1 update. For iOS 10.1 users in Japan, transit support for every major train, subway, ferry and bus will be available. It is the first time that transit directions in Japan have been made available. The iOS 10.1 update also brings a new option to replay bubble and full screen effects to the iMessage app. The Reduce Motion feature needs to be enabled for the effects to work. The update also fixes issues such as contact names appearing incorrectly in iMessage, iMessage opening to a white screen, and videos captured and sent on iMessage missing audio.
The iOS 10.1 update also brings changes and improvements for the Apple Watch. To begin with, it adds distance and average pace to workout summaries in the Activity app for outdoor wheelchair run and walk pace. It also fixes the issue of music playlists not syncing with Apple Watch. For Activity Sharing, the issue of invitations and data not appearing has been fixed, and even the issue with the update of Activity Sharing over mobile data has been fixed. Other than the above mentioned major fixes and improvements, the iOS 10.1 update also brings a long list of improvements and fixes which ranges from Bluetooth connectivity with third party accessories, to the issue of Home Button click settings not appearing in search results. Speaking about iOS 10, as mentioned above, it is the biggest iOS update so far, and it is already running on over 50 percent Apple devices within a month of its launch. According to Apple, iOS 10 as measured by the App Store says that it is running on slightly above half the iPhone and iPad users. Whereas, third-party sources say that the adoption rate is close to 60 percent. Third-party firms like Mixpanel and Fiksu estimate that the iOS 10 update is running on two-third of iOS devices. The major changes that iOS 10 update brought was firstly, the removal of the deeply loved swipe to unlock. To unlock, one needs to press the home button which would lead to the passcode screen or the unlocked screen. The Control Center had developed some changes like changing the icon color to blue for any feature that is currently turned on. The Control Center also allows users to directly access the Night Shift feature along with the usual brightness control. The iMessage app has been totally revamped with the iOS 10 update. Users can now scribble on and add text to their photos and videos when sent to their contacts. The most interesting feature would be the custom doodles which can be used by tapping on the heart icon. One can send handwritten messages or also use different gestures to send full screen effects like fireworks, or kisses. Among the other changes include, photos with artificial intelligence, Apple Music redesigned and Siri s integration with more apps.
