The iPad Pro has been in the rumor mills for the better part of a year, and finally Apple took the wraps off what is the largest tablet in its lineup yet. As far as its size is concerned, it is almost edging into the MacBook Air territory. Not surprisingly, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller says that the iPad Pro boasts the ‘biggest screen on an iOS device, more power and performance than any iOS device’. In line with previous rumors, the iPad Pro flaunts a 12.9-inch display with 5.6 million pixels. Despite the big screen, the tablet is only a tad thicker than the iPad Air 2 at 6.9mm, and weighs around 712 grams.
It is powered by a third-generation A9X 64-bit chipset, which Apple claims is twice as fast as the A8X processor. Apple also boasts that the new tablet is faster than 80 percent of the PCs shipped in the past six months, and its graphics performance is faster than 90 percent of these PCs.
On the photography front, it features an 8-megapixel iSight camera, and while Apple hasn’t revealed the size of the battery inside the iPad Pro, it is said to be good enough to offer up to 10 hours of backup. There is one stereo speaker at each of the four corners of the tablet, and not surprisingly up front is a TouchID sensor.
For the big tablet, Apple has also introduced a new Smart Keyboard, which is priced at $169. It connects to the tablet via a Smart Connector. Apple also introduced a pressure-sensitive stylus called Apple Pencil. You will be able to draw thin lines by pressing lightly, while a deep press will result in a broader line. The stylus will also be compatible with third-party apps from the likes of Adobe and Microsoft, and one can charge it via a Lightning connector hidden inside the body. The stylus is priced at $99.
On the software front, the iPad Pro runs on iOS 9, and with support for multi-tasking, you will be able to run apps side-by-side. As for pricing, it starts from $799 for the 32GB Wi-Fi only variant, $949 for the 128GB Wi-Fi only variant, and $1,079 for the 128GB Wi-Fi+Cellular variant. The tablet goes on sale in November.
