Forget about the iPhone 8, Apple might follow the tradition and announce the S variants to its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in 2017, when the company celebrates its 10th anniversary. Till now, rumors hinted at the company skipping the S variants, and instead opting for iPhone 8 label. However, a Weibo user has leaked alleged supply chain documents, which suggest that Apple will be launching three iPhone models — codenamed D20, D21, and D22. Interestingly, the codename D10 had been used for the iPhone 7 during its development phase, which now indicates that the next iteration of the iPhone could be the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and a third variant which is likely to be a top-tier model. Apple s current product cycle includes upgrades to a particular iPhone model in a period of two years before the next model is announced. There was iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, before the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were launched. Similarly, the company is apparently looking at following its tradition and launching upgraded variants to this year s iPhones. It has been long-rumored that Apple will skip the tradition in 2017 for the special anniversary edition iPhone. However, based on the fresh leaks, it looks like Apple has a special variant of the iPhone 7, internally codenamed Ferrari . Although there is no clarity if the company would be tying up with the premium automobile maker for the special edition smartphone, it is expected that it could boast some high-end features and a special design. Till now, we have seen rumors hinting at three variants of the upcoming iPhone which would differ in terms of display and design. The freshly leaked documents appear to confirm the rumors that there will be three new iPhones in the coming year, including the radically designed Ferrari . The high-end smartphone is expected to boast a glass sandwich design. Apple has previously used such a glass and steel sandwich design for its iPhone 4 smartphone. However, it moved to an all-metal design owing to fragility issues. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 8 could boast truly wireless charging capabilities
The purported Ferrari iPhone is further expected to feature a borderless OLED display. Apple is reportedly in talks with display suppliers such as LG and Sharp for its upcoming iPhone. There have been speculations that the company is considering a curved OLED display that could mimic the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. However, given the lack of suppliers, the feature could either be restricted to the speculated Ferrari model or would be introduced in future iPhones. It is also expected that the high-end model will feature an invisible home button, which falls in line with rumors about the next iPhone featuring a capacitive fingerprint sensor similar to the Xiaomi Mi 5s, which will be layered beneath the display, adding to the edge-to-edge appearance. The premium model is expected to also get the wireless charging feature which Apple has been working on for quite some time now. Based on the company s previous patents, the technology would allow one to charge their smartphone from a distance of 15 feet.
According to a report on Apple Insider, the special-edition Ferrari iPhone is also expected to come with redesigned internals that split the logic board into two discrete units connected by a flex cable. One unit will carry iPhone’s core like the expected A11 SoC and NAND flash storage, while the other unit will house the Wi-Fi and cellular components. One of the biggest design change, based on the latest leaks, is that Apple will relocate the SIM tray from the side of the iPhone to the bottom of the handset to make more room for internal components.
Talking about the purported iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, it is expected that the two models will feature LCD displays sized 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch respectively. For the anniversary edition iPhone in 2017, it is expected that Apple will push the level of dual-camera module, which it introduced with the iPhone 7 Plus, and bring 3D photographing capabilities. To achieve this, the company is reportedly working with LG and examining how it can use the LG Innotek System in its flagship smartphone. LG Innotek already has its own 3D camera and related technologies, and in collaboration with Apple, we can expect that the next iPhone could bring the capabilities.
