Apple has been rumored to launch the next-generation Apple Watch later this year. It was earlier reported that the Apple Watch 3 will be launched in the third quarter of 2017. Backing this is another report which further confirms that the Apple Watch 3 will be launching in the second half of this year. It is also said that Apple will be offering a choice of two generations of the Apple Watch, which will be placed with different price tags. The report further adds that Quanta Computer will remain the main supplier of the Apple Watch 3.
This information comes from a report by DigiTimes, which goes on to say that there will be a new supplier joining the production of the Apple Watch. Compal Electronics will join in to continue the production of the existing Apple Watch Series 2. Compal is said to have moved its smart device production to plants in Chongqing as it begins to prepare production for the Apple Watch. The report highlights that Compal is currently the second largest ODM globally and has shipped five million wearable and IoT devices in 2016. The company expects to ship 10 million units in 2017 with the inclusion of the Apple Watch.
There is no mention however on the specifications or features of the Apple Watch 3. Tracing back to earlier reports, the Apple has been said to focus primarily on the performance and battery life for the Apple Watch 3 and there won’t be any change in the external design. There are reports however which suggest that the Apple Watch 3 could feature a smart band according to recent patents filed by the company. The display on the Apple Watch 3 is expected to be glass-film capacitive glass instead of ‘touch-on-lens’ screen. Apple is also rumored to use a ‘micro-LED’ screen. While there aren’t any details on which processor will be used or the battery life of the Apple Watch 3, it is reported that Apple would be improving on both areas. The Apple Watch 3 is also rumored to come with LTE support which is already available in the international version of the Samsung Gear S3.
