Do you own an Apple Watch? Are you not satisfied with the default watch faces? If you are not, here’s some good news for you. Apple is reportedly looking at providing you with more variety in terms of watch faces by adding third-party support. Code found in the latest watchOS 4.3.1 beta release indicates support for third-party watch faces. Also Read - Apple to stop charging App Store fees from Facebook till 31 December

Until now, Apple had been the only one providing watch faces. Some of these were designed by Pixar and Disney. This could be due to the reason that Apple wants to keep its ecosystem closed. However, it seems the company wants to open up the area for users to have a wider variety of watch faces. In the code of watchOS 4.3.1, one of the methods of the developer tools has a log message that reads, “This is where the 3rd party face config bundle generation would happen,” clearly stating that there could be possible support for third-party watch faces in the near future, 9to5 Mac reports.

It is to be noted that the feature is not implemented at the moment, but is likely to be unlocked with the upcoming watchOS 5 update. However, as Apple has not disclosed anything officially, it is advisable to take the information with a grain of salt. There is also a likelihood of the feature being dropped altogether.

The watchOS 4.3.1 beta also comes with a number of features that are expected to show up in the next official version of the smartwatch OS. One of the features is a new alert system for older apps. When running WatchKit apps (watchOS 1), you will be alerted to update the apps to improve reliability for further versions of watchOS. It is also expected that Apple may drop support for older apps altogether when it officially rolls out watchOS 5.
