Apple launched the Apple Watch Series 4 back in September alongside the new iPhones, and it came with a big new feature that was touted to make it the most advanced smartwatch ever: ECG. The device has the hardware capability to take electro-cardiogram readings of the user, and analyse the data to alert the user of abnormalities. While the feature wasn’t active at launch, a software update has now enabled it in the US. And within days, it’s already saving lives.

A post on Reddit talks about a user who received an abnormal reading – atrial fibrillation, or irregular heart rate – soon after his Apple Watch Series 4 was updated to the latest firmware, WatchOS 5.1.2. While he initially brushed it off, frequent readings coupled with normal readings when his wife tried it out led him to take the abnormal reading seriously. Upon having it investigated properly at a medical center, he was told that the watch had likely saved his life by alerting him to an on-going cardiac issue.

In the post, he goes on to advise users of the Apple Watch Series 4 to update the software and ensure that their cardiac health is looked into. Furthermore, the doctor that attended to him stated that he was expecting such instances to take place, but it happened rather quickly within days of the launch of the feature. Apple also has a fall detection feature, which can alert emergency services and loved ones when the wearer of the watch has taken a fall. Such a feature is particularly useful for elderly users that might have trouble upon falling.
