Apple devices are among the favorite targets for thieves and incidents about iPhone users getting mugged had become so rampant in some countries that Apple had to come up with software security measures that rendered the iPhone useless for anyone using a stolen device. However, the same cannot be said about the Apple Watch, which within a month of its launch seems to have become a prime target for muggers.
Software security in the iPhone allows users to lock it permanently, which makes it impossible to use by anyone else, which deterred thieves from taking the pains of stealing an iPhone. However, on an Apple Watch, anyone can factory reset it without any authentication.
First reported by iDownloadBlog, one just needs to hold down the side button and wait for the option to turn off appears. A force touch tap would take the user to a new menu which would beam an option to “Erase all content and settings” and voila! Apple Watch would become a brand new device that can easily be paired with any iPhone.
This is a glaring security flaw and Apple needs to induce an authentication method which will require the users to authenticate the factory reset before it can be done. While inputting your Apple ID might not be a solution, Apple could implement the same security setting it uses for Apple Pay on the smartwatch.
