John Zilles, 49, was stranded off Ventura, California where great whites sharks have been spotted. While riding a hydrofoil, Zilles crashed into the water and was unable to fly his kite again. He slowly swam against the current with all the kit on him for about an hour in the dangerous waters before realizing he was wearing the Apple Watch. According to Daily Mail, Zilles checked the time on his Apple Watch Series 3 and remembered it can make calls. So he called his kids and told them he will be late, and informed the Coast Guard to rescue him.”I was really surprised that I had a strong signal, so I called my kids, and said ‘don’t worry, I crashed and I’m swimming to shore, and will be home late. I then called my son back, and asked him to send me the number of the Coast Guard, just in case,” he is quoted as saying. In no time, the rescue boat arrived and Zilles was saved from a potentially dangerous situation amidst shark waters. Impressed with the wearable’s features, Zilles wrote to Apple CEO Tim Cook to tell his story, to which he reportedly received a ‘short but sweet’ reply, saying “wow. happy to hear you are safe.”

Apple Watch Series 3 launched alongside the new set of iPhones and is LTE capable. This allows the wearable to work as a standalone hardware capable of making making calls or sending texts without the connected iPhone nearby. It also boasts water resistance capabilities which allows Zilles to survive the current for a significant amount of time.
