At its Gather Round event in California, Apple announced the fourth generation Apple Watch. The new Apple Watch Series 4 is the first major redesign for Apple’s wearable device and comes in at a time when the device has been out selling other smartwatches in the market. With Apple Watch Series 4, Apple seems to be changing performance, design and functionality. The new smartwatches are bigger than what we have seen from the company in the past. Apple says the new Watch Series 4 is more than 30 percent bigger and comes with black ceramic back for superior connectivity. Ahead of the launch, we had seen information that the Watch will come in two new sizes: 40mm and 44mm. The size is measured by the height of the case and this year, they are 2mm bigger. The first three generations of Apple Watch were offered with 38mm and 42mm watch cases. Also Read - Apple CEO Tim Cook claims iOS is more secure than Android
Apple Watch Series 4 also comes with massive display that extends to the edges of the device. The larger display allows for more complications and shows more information at the glance. Apple showed existing faces like Breathe and new faces like Fire, Water and Vapor that show more accessible information on user’s wrist. The watch is also powered by new S4 chipset, which is a 64-bit chipset that Apple claims is two times faster.
Another major change this year is the upgraded accelerometer and gyroscope. Apple says it can now measure up to 32g forces and is resistant against fall. Fitness has been at the core, said Jeff at the event and this year, Apple is adding more features to heart rate monitoring including notification if your heart rate is too low and irregularities around heart beats.
Apple watch now also supports ECG, which improves the heart rate monitoring using electrodes added to the back of the device. We have seen multiple reports of how Apple Watch has alerted users of elevated heart in the past and with new models, Apple is making it even better. Now, Apple Watch users can take ECG of their heart anytime from their wrist and technically making it the first ECG device offered at the counter. Apple says all ECG data is recorded and stored as part of Health record and can be cross synced with your doctor.

“It is amazing to think that the same Watch you wear every day can now take an ECG,” Apple COO Jeff Williams said while unveiling the device. The Apple Watch Series 4 is FDA-approved, runs watchOS 5 and comes with same 18 hour all-day battery life. “Hardware and software integrate to offer completely new and intuitive experience,” Apple design chief Jony Ive said in a product video.
Apple Watch Series 4 will be available in three aluminum finish and new introduction of stainless and gold stainless finish. Apple says all existing band colors and band styles fit any generation of the Apple Watch. The GPS only variant is priced at $399 while the Cellular model will retail for $499. Apple Watch Series 4 will be available starting September 21 and India is not part of initial wave. Apple also announced that watchOS 5 will be available starting September 17. Apple Watch Series 3 will be available at discounted price of $279 after the event.
