The key feature of the Apple iPhone X isn t the new edge-to-edge display, but Face ID which brings sophistication and security to facial recognition system. It makes sense for the company to extend the feature to its other products as well.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is planning to release a next-generation iPad Pro with slim bezels and Face ID like iPhone X this year. The evidence of the tablet has been uncovered in the latest iOS 11.3 and the device could be announced at WWDC.

The details of the new iPad were first uncovered by iHelpBR editor Filipe Esp sito, who found reference to a “modern iPad” in the codes of first iOS 11.3 beta. The reference gains prominence from the fact that Apple referred to iPhone X as the “modern iPhone” in the older iOS firmware. Filipe’s findings were further supported by developer Guilherme Rambo, who found the official render of iPhone X in HomePod firmware last year.

There is a possibility that Apple might be using “modern iPad” as a placeholder in its code. It might be reference to the much rumored iPad Pro with Face ID, which becomes a logical step in Apple’s product roadmap.

Apart from Bloomberg, Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities also believes that Apple will bring Face ID facial recognition feature to iPad this year. Like iPhone X, Apple might ditch the physical home button on the iPad in order to make room for more display and battery. However, the iPad Pro is rumored to stick with LCD display and not switch to OLED panels seen on the redesigned iPhone, due to supply and technological constraints.

The only unknown puzzle is whether iPad Pro will embrace the notch like iPhone X to accommodate the TrueDepth camera system or have a more streamlined design as seen in some leaked renders. Apple is also expected to make Face ID standard on iPhone models later this year.
