With the launch of 2018 iPad Pro, Apple has completely transitioned its iPhone and iPad product range from Touch ID to Face ID for biometric authentication. Now, the company is preparing upgraded version of Face ID technology that could first debut on iPhone launching next year.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities today, who is out with a new supply chain report, the iPhone lineup for 2019 will feature Face ID upgrade. Kuo believes that the 2019 iPhone models will arrive with an upgraded Face ID experience, where Apple will increase the power of the flood illuminator. This will help reduce the potential for environment to interfere with Face ID. The upgrade would mean that users of 2019 iPhone face fewer failed unlocks while using Face ID to unlock their device.

The note from Kuo adds that Apple’s vendors such as IQE, Lumentum and Win Semi will remain the primary suppliers of Face ID hardware and will stand to benefit from the improvements the company plans to introduce next year. Alongside new details about Face ID improvements, Kuo also says Apple will release the next iPad hardware in the fourth quarter of 2019 or first quarter of 2020.

The information about next iPad hardware comes as Apple prepares to start shipping 2018 iPad Pro lineup to consumers. Kuo says the next iPad could include Apple’s new 3D modeling tech called “Time of Fly (ToF)” in the camera. The feature is also expected to arrive on iPhone in 2020, but will first debut on iPad.

Kuo had previously predicted that the 2019 iPhone lineup will echo the three models introduced this year. He believes Apple will have two OLED iPhone and one LCD model next year as well. He is also predicting launch of a new low-priced iPad mini to replace iPad mini 4. We will need to see whether Kuo’s predictions come true when Apple announces new products next year.
