Apple is hosting its second annual iPhone event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. At the event later today, the company is widely expected to launch three new iPhone models, an updated Apple Watch and AirPower wireless charger. There are also rumors of the company introducing new iPads with USB Type-C port and an updated MacBook Air. However, the most intriguing thing so far has been the invite for this event.
Apple started sending out invites for the event early this month and it is called ‘Gather Round’. The invite features a gold circle with the phrase ‘Gather Round’ and Apple seems to be telling the media that it has got new gadgets and people need to gather around to see them. Now, as we inch closer to the actual launch, here is what Apple might be suggesting with its circular event.
Round means Apple Park
The most plausible thing about this invite could be the circular shape of the Apple Park. Apple allowed media to take a sneak peak at the new spaceship-style Apple Park campus last year and this year, the invite could be a subtle hint that the event is happening at this ultra modern workplace for Apple employees for just the second year. Apple Park is the last major project overseen by Steve Jobs before he succumbed to Cancer. The launch event will be held at Steve Jobs Theater, an underground launch venue at the new Apple Park campus.
Apple Watch goes round
Yes, this could be the most direct hint yet at Apple launching a smartwatch with circular face. Apple Watch has always had a square form factor but when it comes to watches, we expect to see them with circular face. Though unlikely, Apple might launch Apple Watch Series 4 with circular design similar to Samsung Galaxy Watch at today’s event.
New Mac Pro
Apple confirmed last year that it is working on a redesigned Mac Pro with modular design. While the shape and design of the new Mac Pro is not known yet, the circular invite could be hinting at the trash can Mac Pro, which has a circular design. There is a possibility that Apple will answer the calls of Pro users today with a new Mac Pro as the one more thing.
Apple is rumored to be working on a cheaper version of its HomePod smart speaker. While the first generation HomePod launched only in February of this year, we haven’t heard much about it since then. At the event, Apple might announce a cheaper version as the alternative to Google Home and Amazon Echo speakers.
New Over-Ear headphones
With the launch of AirPods last year, Apple showed that it is willing to take risk with new product ideas. At today’s event, Apple might take on mainstream audio makers like Sony and Bose with new wireless over-the-ear headphones. There are already rumors of Apple working on updated AirPods with water resistance and over-ear headphones to challenge to Bose QC35 and Sony WH-1000XM series.
New wireless charger
Apple is expected to finally announce the availability of its Airpower Mat wireless charger today. Alongside Airpower, Apple might also introduce new circular wireless charger for Apple Watch and other accessories. Apple earns a significant portion of its revenue from other products like accessories and wireless charger could be a new revenue addition.
At I/O 2018, Google detailed the work carried out by Waymo, its division working on self-driving and autonomous vehicles. At Gather Round event, Apple might talk about its ambition to create a secure and autonomous car. The circular invite might relate to the steering wheel, which could become non-existent on autonomous vehicles.
Watch: Apple iPhone X Video Review
Apple has removed headphone jack from iPhone and this year, it plans to ditch the Touch ID button as well. With Apple dropping such conventional interfaces, there is a growing need for a product or dongle to be specific that adds these functionalities. The invite might hint at a circular dongle with headphone and Touch ID button because why not.
