With WWDC just over, Apple now has something else to keep its fans happy. No, it is not a new iPhone. But rather, Apple’s very own reality TV show ‘Planet of the Apps’ is now up and running. For the uninitiated, Apple announced a reality TV show way back in March 2016 and since then, there has been no update regarding further plans. But now finally, Planet of the Apps is up and running.

As the name suggests, the TV show is all about apps, giving nearly 100 app developers a chance to feature and present their ideas on television and gain funding. The app developers will come together to battle it out and one final app will get a chance to be a fully funded app on the Apple Store. Before the launch of the actual show, Apple announced the trailer and the show is available to watch on iTunes store as well as on planetoftheapps.com.

Unsurprisingly, the judges on the show are celebrities who will take a call on whether they are interested in the app idea or not and give the chance to the contestants to progress ahead in the show. The celebrity judges are: Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, Will.i.am (also a producer on the show) and Gary Vaynerchuk. The show concept originally belongs to Ben Silverman and Will.i.am who pitched it to Apple executives from where it was taken forward. Zane Lowe is the host of the show. The entire series is divided into 10 episodes and each episode will debut on Tuesday evenings at 6.00PM PDT (Wednesday morning 6.30AM in India). While the first episode will be available for free, the rest are charged. The interesting change the show has brought about is replacing the ‘elevator pitch’ (which means a good business idea should not take more time to elaborate and be convincing than an elevator ride) with an ‘escalator pitch’.

In the initial stages, contestants get a number of seconds to pitch their idea and the judges swipe left or right depending on what their thoughts are regarding the idea. Getting the right swipe means the contestant can continue in the run for funding. The funding to develop the app will be provided by Lightspeed Venture Partners (that has funded the famous Snapchat). Once the participants move ahead, the judges will act as mentors to each one, helping them develop their idea and expand the app business further. Apple slowly plans to launch a separate app for the show though there’s no clue on when the app will finally be announced. Apple is looking to take on the likes of Netflix and Amazon with their original content and also boost Apple Music at the same time. Presently, there have been no verdicts or details regarding the viewership of the show and numbers are expected to start rolling in after the initial weeks.
