Asus today launched the FonePad 7 dual-SIM, a 7-inch voice calling tab for Rs 12,999 in India. Unveiled earlier at the Mobile World Congress, the tablet is the dual-SIM variant of the FonePad 7 launched last year and comes with a slightly different processor than last year’s variant. So, while it’s not an entirely new product, let’s see how it fares against probably the best Android tablet in the range, the Google Nexus 7. Both devices are made by Asus, but while the Nexus 7 (2013) brings stock Android to the table, the Asus FonePad 7 gets voice calling and now, dual-SIM support too. Also Read - Best 12GB RAM phones for gaming to buy in September 2021
Both the devices come with similar dimensions, but at 340 grams, the Asus FonePad 7 is slightly heavier than the Google Nexus 7. The two speaker grilles (on top and bottom of the screen) break the monotony of the FonePad 7, while the Nexus 7 is, well, plain.
The Asus FonePad 7 has a 7-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, boasting a pixel density of 216ppi. The Google Nexus 7, on the other hand, features a 7-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) display with a richer pixel density of 323ppi. The difference might not be visible in flipping through menus, but once you start reading or watching videos, the difference is expected to be noticeable. The Nexus 7 wins this hands down.
On the hardware front, there’s quite some difference between the two. The Asus FonePad 7 comes with a dual-core 1.2GHz Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM, while the Google Nexus 7 gets a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC and 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 320 GPU. Again, the Nexus 7 comes out on top.
Both devices come with a 5-megapixel primary camera. The Nexus 7 has a 1.2-megapixel camera while the FonePad 7 boasts a 2-megapixel shooter at the front. Video capturing capabilities aren’t different either, with the ability to take full HD (1920×1080 pixels) video available on both the tablets. Battery and Storage:
The Nexus 7 with a 3,950mAh battery isn’t known for its battery life. And it remains to be seen how well the similar battery on the Asus FonePad 7 performs, given that the Asus has voice calling and dual-SIM support added on top.
The FonePad 7 gets 8GB of internal memory, which can be expanded using a microSD card up to 32GB large, while the Nexus 7 is available with internal storage options of 16GB and 32GB, but sadly, the memory can’t be expanded.
Being in the Google family has its own benefits. The Google Nexus 7 comes with Android 4.4.2 KitKat, while the Asus FonePad 7 has to make do with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Also, while the Nexus 7 runs on stock Android, the FonePad 7 gets Asus’ UI over Android OS.
The FonePad offers voice calling and dual-SIM support, which should interest those who use tablets to make phone calls. The Nexus 7, in comparison, doesn’t offer voice calling but the more expensive LTE version offers GSM-based internet.
The two devices here might be manufactured by the same manufacturer but there are certain basic differences between the two. The Asus FonePad 7 offers voice calling and dual-SIM support, which means if you are looking for using your tablet to make phone calls, this is the only option among the two.
But as a tablet, the Nexus 7 looks to be a better option. The display, although of the same size, is of better quality. It runs the latest version of Android, and also has twice the amount of RAM as well. Adding all that, the premium of about Rs 6,000 that you would pay for the 16GB Google Nexus 7 (2013) over the Asus FonePad 7 doesn’t look like a bad deal. But if you want to use the tablet as a regular phone as well, the FonePad 7 is the one.
