Asus today will throw it hat in the Indian smartphone ring by launching a series of affordable smartphones. The Taiwanese IT giant is launching three devices branded as Zenfone, after its Zenbook series of notebook. The Zenfones will be available in three display sizes – 4, 5 and 6 inches – with all of them running on Intel’s silicon, which isn’t surprising considering the relationship the two companies share in the PC business. Asus had first unveiled the Zenfone at CES in January this year. Apart from the premium build quality, what caught everyone’s attention was the pricing – $99 for the Zenfone 4, $149 for the Zenfone 5 and $199 for the Zenfone 6. If priced right, the Zenfone could be a surprise success for both Asus and Intel, the latter struggling for two years not to make its presence felt in the smartphone space when PC shipments are dwindling.
