Claimed to be the world s first smartphone with real-time beautification technology, the Asus Zenfone Live made its entry to the Indian market today. It is priced at Rs 9,999 and boasts its support for real-time beautification technology in live videos as its USP. We leveled the Asus Zenfone Live against the Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Lenovo K6 Power. Asus Zenfone Live features a 5-inch HD display with 2.5D curved glass on top. The Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Lenovo K6 Power both feature a 5-inch display but with a full HD (1080p) resolution. ALSO READ: Asus Zenfone Live review: Move beyond selfie phones, enter live video
All the smartphones in the competition here boast Qualcomm s Snapdragon chipsets. Asus Zenfone Live is powered by Snapdragon 410 quad-core SoC paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. Xiaomi Redmi 4 runs Snapdragon 435 octa-core 1.4GHz chipset paired with 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage, further expandable via microSD card. While the Lenovo K6 Power is equipped with the Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which can be further expanded up to 128GB.
It is worth mentioning that the use of Snapdragon 410 SoC in the newer Asus Zenfone Live is bit of a disappointment considering competitors offer a better configuration. If one takes into account the RAM and storage on offer then the Lenovo K6 Power stands out with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of default storage. Additionally, both Xiaomi Redmi 3 and Lenovo K6 Power have been tested performers.
All the smartphones run Android Marshmallow based custom skins. The Asus Zenfone Live runs Marshmallow-based Zen UI while the Xiaomi Redmi 4 runs MIUI and the Lenovo K6 Power runs Vibe UI layered above.
The camera feature is the USP in Asus Zenfone Live. The smartphone features a 13-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture, auto-focus, and LED flash. Its real-time beautification technology is accompanied with BeautyLive mode which supports live-streaming for Facebook or YouTube. It basically extends the live filters already seen through apps like Snapchat and Facebook, along with a face beautification mode to live videos. For selfie lovers, there is a 5-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture, 1.4 m pixels, and soft light LED flash for brighter portraits. The front camera is also equipped with a wide-angle lens with an 82-degree field of view.
Xiaomi Redmi 4, on the other hand, features a 13-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel selfie camera up front. Although it doesn t boast newer AR-like capabilities like the Zenfone Live, the results have been found to be decent in terms of color reproduction and sharpness. Lenovo K6 Power is equipped with a 13-megapixel Sony IMX258 sensor rear camera and 8-megapixel Sony IMX219 front facing camera. In our review, we have detailed the camera s fast image processing prowess and pro mode output.
Overall, if you look at the camera specifications, there is little difference in terms of megapixels on offer. However, what gives the Asus Zenfone Live an edge is its interesting blend of filter and beautification technology support for live videos. This could prove helpful for vloggers or casual users who have been unhappy with how they ended up looking during a live video.
Battery and connectivity
The Asus Zenfone Live is fuelled by a 2,650mAh battery which stands in poor light if compared with the 4,100mAh battery of the Xiaomi Redmi 4 or the 4,000mAh battery of the Lenovo K6 Power. Given that the Zenfone Live has an add-on task of supporting beauty mode in live videos, the battery capacity doesn t seem to be enough.
One of the biggest cons of the Zenfone Live is that it lacks a fingerprint sensor, something which both Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Lenovo K6 Power have on offer. In an age and time when user security has become utmost important, it is a disappointing move by Asus to ditch the sensor. ALSO READ: Lenovo K6 Power Review
Connectivity options across the three smartphones include dual SIM support, microSD card support, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS support.
If you someone who often goes live through social media channels and wants to have a flawless appearance in the video, then the Asus Zenfone Live can come to your rescue at a budget. However, it is to be noted that the feature doesn t add value to videos. The specifications too are not awe-inspiring. Buying a smartphone merely for the live beauty tool seems like a futile expense. However, if you’re looking at budget options, you could also consider the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 that offers a slightly larger 5.5-inch FHD display along with performance by the Snapdragon 625 SoC. Other notable options within the budget of sub-Rs 10,000 is the Coolpad Note 5 Lite that offers you a fingerprint sensor and a front flash all at a price of Rs 8,199.
If you’re still looking for something more, the Honor 6X might feel right at just a little more. It features a dual camera module at the back. With a combination of a 12-megapixel and 2-megapixel rear camera, the smartphone is considered one of the only few budget smartphones to offer DSLR-like output. However, it will set you back by Rs 12,999.
