The budget smartphone segment has another contender for Indian consumers. With the launch of Asus Zenfone Max M2, online buyers can look at this option apart from existing Honor 8C, Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro, and Realme U1.

Asus launched the Zenfone Max M2 as one of the lower variant of its Zenfone Max Pro M2. The device will go on sale on December 20 on Flipkart with quite a few launch offers including Rs 99 mobile protection plan and No Cost EMI. So if you are also planning to buy one of the variant of Zenfone Max M2, then here’s a quick comparison of the device with Honor 8C, Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro, and Realme U1.

All four smartphones feature a full display design, and sport a notched display as well, hence you would only see very little difference upfront. The Asus Zenfone Max M1, Redmi 6 Pro and Honor 8C comes with metal unibody design, but the Realme U1 gets a polymer glass finish.

The Asus Zenfone Max M2 sports a 6.26-inch HD+ (720×1520 pixels) with an 19:9 aspect ratio and 2.5 curved glass protection. Similarly, Honor’s 8C also sport a 6.26-inch display while the Realme U1 has a slightly larger display measuring at 6.3-inches. Xiaomi’s Redmi 6 Pro comes with a 5.84-inch full-HD+ (1080×2280 pixels) panel.  The Honor 8C’s display is at a disadvantage here since it uses an HD+ panel like the Zenfone Max M2, while the other two models offer a full-HD+ panel. The Realme U1 and Honor 8C also get a smaller notch designed in the shape of a teardrop while the Redmi 6 Pro has a wider notch design.

The Redmi 6 Pro is inferior in this case as it uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC while Asus Zenfone Max M2 and Honor 8C gets Snapdragon 632 under the hood. Coming to Realme U1, it has the most interesting specifications of the pack since it uses MediaTek’s Helio P70 SoC which is fabricated using a 12nm process.

In terms of combination, the Asus Zenfone Max M2 starts with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, and goes up to 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. On the other hand, Honor 8C comes with 4GB of RAM and option for 32GB or 64GB internal storage. The Redmi 6 Pro also comes in two storage options of 3GB or 4GB of RAM with 32GB or 64GB standard storage respectively. Lastly, the Realme U1 comes with 3GB RAM, 32GB storage or 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant options.

All four devices support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, dual-SIM and 4G LTE. These run Android 8.1 Oreo with their respective customization, but it is not clear when they will actually get Android 9 Pie update. As for Zenfone Max Pro M2 model, the company has confirmed Android 9 Pie update in January 2019, but said nothing for Max M2.

As far as battery is concerned, the Asus Zenfone Max M2, Redmi 6 Pro and Honor 8C packs a larger 4,000mAh battery, while the Realme U1 gets slightly smaller 3,500mAh battery.

The Asus ZenFone Max M2 sports a dual rear camera setup of 13-megapixel primary and 2-megapixel dedicated depth sensor combination. The Realme U1 and Honor 8C also have combination of 13-megapixel and 2-megapixel dual rear camera setup. As for Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro, its dual rear camera system comes with 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensor combination.

For selfies, the ZenFone Max M2 sports an 8-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and an LED flash. The Honor 8C also features a single 8-megapixel selfie camera. However, Realme U1 beats all other smartphones in this segment with its 25-megapixel front camera designed specifically for capturing selfies. The Redmi 6 Pro, on the other hand, has a 5-megapixel selfie camera only.

The Asus Zenfone Max M2 starts at Rs 9,999 for 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, while the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant will cost Rs 11,999. On the other hand, Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is priced at Rs 10,999 for the base model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. The higher variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage is priced at Rs 12,999. The Realme U1 is priced at Rs 11,999 for the 3GB RAM variant and Rs 14,499 for the 4GB RAM variant. The Honor 8C is priced at Rs 11,999 for the 32GB storage model while the 64GB storage model is priced at Rs 12,999, which is a sweet spot in terms of pricing.
