Anyone who has grown up using gadgets will relate to this. Our bad posture when using tech products is giving us something known as ‘iPad neck’, which is, well, quite literally a pain in the neck. According to research published in a study by the University of Nevada, about 85 percent of users surveyed said they suffered some form of stiffness, pain or soreness in their necks due to hunching when using a tablet.
Additionally, about 65 percent of users also suffered from back and shoulder pain as a result of the same use. And while the survey talks about tablet use, this is something that affects users of all kinds of gadgets, including laptop computers and smartphones. Increasing use of these devices means that people spend a lot of time with their necks hunched over; this isn’t the natural posture for people, and hence it’s causing aches and pains.
The study also suggests that women are twice as likely to experience the issue as men, and sitting without proper back support further increases the risk of pain when hunching over the tablet. The issue occurs primarily because you usually have a tablet or smartphone near your lap, and you’re looking down to it, forcing you to keep your neck hunched over long periods of time.

About 55 percent of those surveyed said the discomfort was moderate, with 10 percent stating the pain was severe and 15 percent stating they had trouble sleeping. Increasing use of gadgets is leading to all kinds of health problems, and it’s important that we be mindful of our health when using our devices.
