BGR India News Wrap: Reliance JioPhone, mAadhaar app launch, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Xiaomi Mi Max 2, and more

Here are our top five news stories of the week.

The week gone by was definitely an interesting one from the tech perspective. Filled with a lot of launches in the smartphone as well as the app space, the week did not have any boring moments. While news around Apple iPhone 8, Google Pixel 2 and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 continued to dominate attention, there were also leaks surrounding other devices. Google too made a lot of announcements, from revamping the very traditional search page to announcing a new Events feature. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the Reliance Jio JioPhone launch.

Reliance was long rumored to launch a budget feature phone with 4G capabilities in India. The brand finally announced the Reliance Jio JioPhone with 4G capabilities during the annual AGM. Introducing something new once again, Reliance has made the JioPhone effectively free for the masses – although you do have to pay a Rs 1,500 security deposit. The user can pay the one-time deposit which can be reclaimed any time after 3 years on returning the feature phone. There were also new plans introduced for the JioPhone, starting at Rs 153. As is the case with any Jio connection, the JioPhone supports free calling, SMS and unlimited (with FUP) data.

And with one of the most anticipated smartphones out of the way finally, this week also saw major developments around the other one – namely the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Samsung has officially rolled out the invite for the next edition Note series smartphone, the Note 8 and it will be unveiled on August 23. Considering nothing about the device is a secret anymore, the wait seems long. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is expected to come with the same Infinity display as on the Galaxy S8, the Snapdragon 835 SoC and a dual rear-camera setup. The battery is rumored to be downsized to 3,300mAh from the 3,500mAh one on the ill-fated Note 7.

The mAadhaar app was launched by UIDAI and the Indian government. The app enables users to carry a digitized version of their Aadhaar card on their smartphones. The app is available to all Android users running Android version 4.4 and above. You can import all your Aadhaar information on the app and use it for all your digital transactions requiring Aadhaar number and verification. The app also brings the functionality of locking Aadhaar biometrics to users. Many Indians however, are facing problems signing into the app as the SMS service is slow and erroneous.

In other news, the large Xiaomi phablet, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 made its way to the country. The phablet is a battery focused device that claims to give up to two days of battery life to the device. The device is priced at Rs 16,999 in India. Previously, Snapdeal was said to have rejected Flipkart’s takeover offer and this week, we heard reports of Flipkart sweetening the deal for Snapdeal and offering $900 million.
