Bharti Airtel began commerical rollout of its 4G VoLTE services to challenge Reliance Jio in September last year. The largest telecom operator promised that its VoLTE service will be available across the country by March of this year. However, the rollout seems to have run into problems, and the PAN-India rollout seems be delayed by around six months.

Since last year, the VoLTE service has been rolled out in a systematic phased manner. In order to get more customers on board, Airtel also announced a VoLTE Beta program, which offered 30GB of free data to users in exchange for their feedback about the service.

Bharti Airtel’s VoLTE reaches 20 Circles

Bharti Airtel has now confirmed that its VoLTE or Voice over LTE is now available across 20 circles. This indicates that Airtel’s VoLTE services must be available across all of its circles, except markets like Himachal Pradesh and Jammu Kashmir. The company should have 4G VoLTE active in remaining circles as well once it initiates expansion of the network. With 4G rollout, Airtel has managed to beat Vodafone, which seemed to be expanding its service faster than rivals.

Airtel aims to become PAN-India VoLTE service provider

Airtel was the second telecom player to commence 4G VoLTE in India, and it now aims to become the second player with VoLTE across the country. Reliance Jio is the only telecom player to offer PAN-India 4G VoLTE service. By covering 20 circles, Airtel is almost closer to offering 4G VoLTE PAN-India, which has 22 telecom circles or service areas. Airtel’s main rival Vodafone is said to have VoLTE services active across 13 circles.

Airtel also expands device support

With the expansion of 4G VoLTE across circles, the company is also expanding the list of compatible mobile devices. Airtel’s 4G VoLTE now works on smartphones from brands like Sony, Honor, Nokia, Tecno, and Huawei among others. It has added support for Sony Xperia XZ2, which was recently launched in India in addition to popular smartphones like Redmi Note 5 Pro and OnePlus 6, which already support voice over LTE.

Airtel is not supporting Google Pixel or Motorola devices

Bharti Airtel is expanding its list of compatible devices, but the company is not adding support for smartphones from Google or Motorola just yet. Google Pixel devices and smartphones made by Motorola do not support 4G VoLTE on Bharti Airtel just yet.
