It’s been over a year and half, but the telecom war just doesn’t seem to end. There are new plans launched by mobile operators every week, and the benefits just keep getting better. Recently, Bharti Airtel revised its prepaid plans to take on Reliance Jio, and we pitted the plans to find out which one offers a better deal.

To begin with, Airtel has launched a new Rs 249 plan that comes with a validity of 28 days and offer 2GB daily high-speed 3G/4G data. The plan also includes 100 free SMS per day, unlimited local and national calls, unlimited national roaming along with free incoming and outgoing calls. But there is an FUP on the unlimited calls, which we will talk about in a bit.

Reliance Jio, on the other hand, has a plan priced at Rs 299 and it also comes with a validity of 28 days. Under this plan, users get 3GB daily high speed 4G data, which is 1GB more than Airtel’s offering. The plan also includes unlimited local and national calls, 100 free SMS per day and access to Reliance Jio suite of apps. Once the daily limit of 3GB is exhausted, the speed will be throttled down to 64kbps, and it will again be restored at 2AM every night.

Airtel has also revised its Rs 349 plan which comes with 28 days validity and offers 3GB high speed daily data. The plan also comes with other benefits such as unlimited local and STD calls, unlimited national roaming with unlimited calls. Now, as mentioned above, there is an FUP on the number of free outgoing calls, which is 300 minutes per day and 1,200 minutes in a week. After the limit is exhausted, users will be charged 10 paise per minute.

Now, Reliance Jio also has a prepaid plan priced at Rs 349 and it comes with a longer validity of 70 days. However, the daily data is reduced to 1.5GB per day, after which the speed will be throttled to 64kbps. The plan also includes unlimited access to JioTV, JioMovies and JioMusic among other apps. And unlike Airtel, Jio does not have any restrictions on voice calls, meaning you get truly unlimited outgoing calls.

So, which plan is better? It clearly depends on your needs. The Airtel Rs 249 plan is Rs 50 cheaper than Reliance Jio’s Rs 299 plan, and offers the same validity. By paying Rs 50 extra, you get 1GB extra data with Jio. But with Airtel, if you want 3GB data per day, you’ll have shell out Rs 100 extra. Spending the same amount on Reliance, gives you 1.5GB daily data, but a longer validity, 42 days more. It is ideal for those who don’t consume massive amount of data and are looking for longer validity.
