The smartphone market of the country is getting a lot of attention from technology companies who are increasingly building India-centric hardware. Serial tipster Evan Blass revealed what looks like a render of the purported BlackBerry smartphone, weirdly named ‘Ghost’. Based on the image, we can expect an edge-to-edge display, and a slim form factor. Also Read - Ola to offer free oxygen concentrators to the needy
What is also interesting to note here is the absence of the iconic QWERTY keyboard. If the leaked image is anything to go by, then the BlackBerry Ghost smartphone will come with an on-screen keyboard and no physical button on the front.
According to TechCrunch, the BlackBerry Ghost has been designed by Delhi-based telecom, Optiemus. The telecom entered into a licensing agreement with BlackBerry last year. The Indian company is tasked with selling BlackBerry-branded hardware in India. In most of the other regions, China-based TCL is assigned the selling and manufacturing task of BlackBerry smartphones.
BlackBerry’s last offering in the Indian market was the BlackBerry KEYone, which was released back in August. Priced at a premium of Rs 39,999, the smartphone featured a 4.5-inch IPS LCD display, and brought back the slider QWERTY keypad. It is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC paired with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage. The smartphone packs a 12-megapixel rear camera, and an 8-megapixel front shooter. Fueling the smartphone is a 3,5050mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. Connectivity options include fingerprint sensor, BlackBerry security software, 4G LTE support, 4K video recording support, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.
Irrespective of which region the upcoming BlackBerry Ghost is launched in, it is critical for the brand to save itself from fading away amidst the growing competition from Chinese manufacturers. When it comes to India, pricing the device right is what will help resurrect the market share. BlackBerry, even after its comeback by embracing the Android platform, is still delivering expensive products, which is unlikely to do any good.
