BlackBerry Priv to stop receiving monthly security updates

BlackBerry's first Android phone has reached end-of-life, as the Canadian manufacturer cuts official support for the device.

BlackBerry has announced that it will no longer deliver monthly security updates for the Android-powered Priv handset. The company will no longer roll out monthly updates to the device that was launched over two years ago. It recently said that the Priv will not get the Android Nougat update. However, the company had also mentioned that it will provide necessary patches whenever needed. On the other hand, BlackBerry has also announced that it is extending support for BB10 and BBOS up to 2019. The company said that it will also introduce a new trade-up program which will offer discounts for current BlackBerry users to upgrade to new BlackBerry smartphones. BlackBerry’s blog post read – “When we introduced our first Android device more than 24 months ago, we committed to delivering 2 years of monthly software updates for the Priv. Having now stepped outside the original 2-year window, we will no longer be delivering monthly updates for the Priv moving forward,”

In terms of specifications, the smartphone flaunts a 5.4-inch WQHD (2560x1440pixels) AMOLED display. Under the hood is Qualcomm s Snapdragon 808 hexa-core SoC paired with 3GB of RAM. There is also a 32GB of onboard storage and a microSD card slot for further expansion up to 2TB.

In terms of photography, the Priv sports an 18-megapixel rear shooter with OIS and PDAF. It can also record 4K videos at 30fps and full HD videos at 60fps. Up front, there is a 2-megapixel camera for selfies and video calling. The phone is armed with a 3,410mAh battery and Quick Charge 2.0 support, connectivity options such as 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.1 LE, GPS and Wi-Fi Direct are present. On the software front, the BlackBerry Priv ran on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS at launch, but has received the update to Android Marshmallow since.
