Bluetooth is all set to receive a major upgrade. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the non-profit organization, which oversees the development of Bluetooth standards and the licensing of the Bluetooth technologies announced version 4.2 of the wireless technology, a significant update over the last year’s Bluetooth 4.1. The update brings faster connections, better connectivity, and more privacy controls. Also Read - Samsung's two unnamed phones get Bluetooth certification
With the new version, the transfer speeds between two devices connected over Bluetooth will be improved by up to 2.5 times. This is possible because of the increased capacity for Bluetooth Smart data packets, which are now able to hold ten times as much data as before. The other major addition is improvements while connecting with Smart devices that use Bluetooth LE (Low Energy). These devices include sensors and fitness gears, and smartwatches. With the upgrade, not only will the data interaction between the two devices be faster, it will also sip less power. Also Read - Xiaomi Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 Basic to launch soon in India
Bluetooth 4.2 also focuses on the security and privacy. The new protocol promises to make it harder for a Bluetooth-paired device to get tracked. With the rise of beacons and other Internet of Things capable devices, retailers were able to connect to a customer’s phone without their consent. The other major improvement is support for newer IPv6 protocol. This addition will ensure a seamless and lesser time connecting to the Internet, including the Internet Protocol Support Profile (IPSP) via IPv6/6LoWPAN. Sadly though, unlike Bluetooth 4.1, which came as a software update to Bluetooth 4.0, the Bluetooth 4.2 will require hardware improvements. Some features like privacy controls can still be added to older devices via software, but other capabilities including and especially speed and IPv6 features will require a new hardware adapter.
