Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, the state-owned telecom player has announced a new weekly prepaid plan of Rs 27 that rivals similar offering from rivals Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular. The new entry-level from the telco will be available for its prepaid subscribers starting from August 6, 2018 across all the circles where BSNL operates.

According to Telecom Talk, BSNL has instructed all the circle authorities to implement this new plan before August 6. It has also instructed circles that have a tariff plan with denomination Rs 27 to push it down to the next vacant denomination. With the new Rs 27 weekly plan, BSNL is offering unlimited voice calls, 300 SMS and 1GB data during the entire validity period.

BSNL subscribers getting this weekly plan priced at Rs 27 will get unlimited voice calls for a period of seven days. The plan does not have any FUP limit for voice calls but benefit excludes mobile numbers operated in Mumbai and Delhi circles. Alongside voice call benefit, BSNL also offers data benefit of 1GB on 2G/3G network during the validity period. The plan also offers 300 SMS benefits for the duration of the plan.

BSNL is essentially challenging Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone, the three big players with its weekly plan. Jio has a weekly plan priced at Rs 52 which offers a total of 1.05GB of 4G data broken down into 150MB per day. It also offers unlimited voice calls to any network across the country and 70 SMS for seven days. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone do not offer a weekly plan but they do offer a Rs 47 plan with validity of 28 days. The plan benefits include 125 minutes of voice calls, 50 SMS and 500MB data for the duration of the plan.

BSNL is clearly ahead of Reliance Jio in terms of both pricing and overall benefits. However, the biggest shortcoming here is the lack of 4G support and unavailability of free calls to mobile networks operating in Mumbai and Delhi. The new Rs 27 plan joins existing data plans priced at Rs 39 and Rs 50.
