The sudden onslaught of Reliance Jio, and its lucrative data-voice offerings caught rivals off guard. Now, with JioGigaFiber set to arrive soon, competitors want to be fully prepared in advance, and are busy ramping up their (existing) offerings.

State-owned telecom operator BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) has been on a roll lately, refreshing many of its broadband plans. Now, the company has revised its entry level BB249 (which, as the identifier suggests, is priced at Rs 249/month), making it even better.

The revised BB249 broadband plan now offers 15GB of FUP (Fair Usage Policy) data allowance, which is three times more than what it used to offer before. The change will be effective throughout the country (in all the circles where the plan is available) from September 1.

Apart from the increased data allowance, the BB249 plan is essentially the same as it was before. It offers speed of 8Mbps till the FUP limit is reached. After that, the speed is reduced to 1Mbps, with no caps on downloads/usage. In addition, the plan also offers unlimited voice calls to other networks from 10:30PM to 06:00AM, on all days.

It’s worth noting that the BB249 plan is available with an (optional) yearly rental facility. Customers can opt for it by paying Rs 2,739. The benefit in this is that they only have to pay for eleven months, with the remaining one month being free.

Recently, BSNL had revised four of its existing broadband plans, upgrading them with faster download speeds, and better Fair Usage Policy (FUP) data allowances. Currently, however, these plans are only limited to the Chennai circle.
