Government-owned mobile services operator BSNL has launched its latest prepaid STV (special tariff voucher) plan, priced at Rs 241. The plan offers users a massive 2.5GB of data per day, and is valid for 30 days. This is a special tariff voucher though, and does not offer any calling or SMS benefits on the plan, which will have to be added separately as prepaid balance or through another plan. The plan is useful for users who are heavy data consumers, offering a high daily limit of 2.5GB data per day. However, note that BSNL does not offer 4G services in India yet, unlike private players such as Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular. Therefore, the data usage will be on BSNL’s 2G and 3G networks, which operate at lower data speeds than 4G. While BSNL’s prepaid plans have improved over the last few months, it still comes across as expensive or not quite offering as much value to its user base as the private telecom operators. In comparison, Reliance Jio offers a 28-day validity plan for Rs 198, which includes 2GB of high-speed data per day (free and unlimited usage at 64kbps after the high-speed quota is exhausted), and also offers free calling and 100 SMS per day for the price. BSNL is offering 0.5GB more data per day as well as two extra days of validity, but no calling benefits will likely be a concern for users.

While BSNL isn’t offering 4G services yet, a proposal to do so has been approved by the DoT, and has been sent to the Union Cabinet for approval. Once in place, BSNL will be able to offer high-speed data and VoLTE services, similar to the offerings by Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular in the country.
