Flash photography is bad, and you should try and avoid flash as much as possible. This is the most common advice that beginners get every time they venture into photography. However, the proper use of flash can lead to some incredibly useful photos. Also Read - Canon India senior executive, C Sukumaran talks about EOS R5, R6, coronavirus, more

The biggest problem with flash photography is understanding the timing, and the direction in which the light needs to be triggered. If you have been holding out from embracing flash due to these very reasons then Canon might have a solution in place for you. The company has announced a new a flash in its Speedlite series called 470EX-AI that will remove the learning curve associated with using flash. The new $399 (approximately Rs 26,000) flash from Canon can automatically determine the best spot to ‘bounce’ the light off. If you don’t know how to drive then there is self-driving vehicle, but if you are not confident about flash then there is this Speedlite flash. The flash looks like any other flash in the Speedlite series, but its intelligence is powered by a motor inside (located at the base and hinge), and a sensor located at the corner of the flash.

As soon as you double tap the shutter button on your camera, the flash points at the subject and calculates the distance and it then does the same by pointing at the ceiling. The flash then reorients itself in the direction it considers best for bouncing off the light. Canon says that cameras already support auto exposure, auto-focus and auto white balance, and this is the natural iteration in the form of an automatic flash system.

“Canon values the opportunity to help entry-level and enthusiast photographers take pictures to the best of their ability, and we are excited to see what images photographers capture using the invaluable and innovative tools we create,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, President and COO, Canon USA Inc.

The Canon Speedlite 470EX-AI flash also includes infrared AF assist mode, optical receiver transmission and flash coverage from 14mm and 24mm to 105mm. The flash is expected to go on sale sometime in April in the US, but there is no word on its India availability. It would be hard to judge the consistency of this technology but one thing is clear, Canon will remove the stigma that surrounds photography with flash.
