Despite there being three well-established commercial virtual reality headsets out there, of which Sony and its PS VR headset posted impressive sales figures this year, the virtual reality industry continued to witness lukewarm adoption. In its stead, in the past two years, augmented reality has earned a new sense of purpose with industry, owing to the rise of the likes of Niantic s Pok mon Go, Apple s new ARKit framework, Google s AR Core, and very importantly, Snapchat s face filters. And so, CES 2018 could be a stage for AR to take the next step this year. What we see on our phones currently is still at the low-end of AR. With dedicated gadgets for the technology, you could experience a full blown sci-fi movie.

Sony Xperia smartphones

In a leak yesterday, we learnt that Sony is working on three new smartphones that vary from mid-range and flagship price brackets. Succeeding last year s Xperia L1 and the Xperia XA1, Sony s Xperia L2, Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra were rumored, and are expected to be showcased at the CES 2018.

TVs will graduate to Artificial Intelligence and HDR display

When it comes to display, LG is certainly one of the bests. Each year at CES, LG is seen showcasing some new innovation in the display technology. This year, LG is believed to showcase new televisions equipped with its artificial intelligence (AI) platform called DeepThinQ at the show, along with the Google Assistant. LG will unveil the 2018 editions of premium TVs, including the OLED TV ThinQ and the Super Ultra HD TV ThinQ.

Moreover, high dynamic range (HDR) video will continue to evolve at the show. Expect many of the new TVs unveiled at CES to support both Dolby Vision and HDR10, though some may stick with just the latter.

LG and Sony will highlight their latest OLED sets, of which the mentioned LG TVs will support High Dynamic Range (HDR) content.

LG V30 Raspberry Rose variant

LG recently has announced that a new color for its V30 flagship device will debut at CES 2018. But it s not simply red or pink. The Raspberry Rose LG V30 variant will be shown off officially at CES 2018 in Las Vegas starting next week. Originally, the LG V30 was launched in four color choices of Aurora Black, Cloud Silver, Moroccan Blue and Lavender Violet.

In-display fingerprint sensor could be a thing

Last year at the Mobile World Congress China, Vivo gave us the first ever look at the under display fingerprint sensor technology. This year at the CES 2018, Vivo may unveil Vivo X20 Plus smartphone, which could be the first smartphone to launch with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Google Assistant to take on Alexa

Smart home gadgets have had a big presence at CES for years. But it wasn’t until recently that they actually came within reach for most consumers, thanks to increasingly easy installations and connections to our phones and voice assistants. While Alexa has been a popular compatible assistant for products showcased in the past, Google Assistant will apparently be in the mix too this year.

Smart glasses, portable directional speakers and more

Weirdest gadgets top the lists at CES every year, and this year wouldn t be any different. Among many such gadgets that we may see at the event this year, Samsung has announced that it will showcase three new C-Lab projects and commercial products from seven C-Lab at CES 2018. The three new C-Lab projects include S-Ray, GoBreath, and Rel m no glass. The highlight is a product line called S-Ray, short for Sound-Ray, which is made up of three different speakers that are supposed to act like headphones playing music so that only a single person can hear it.

Electric cars

While big cars and concepts have been a part of the show for years, this year is expected to be more about the technology that is in those vehicles. From what the The Verge reports, Ford, Byton, Uber and Lyft could show off their work in this segment in some form or the other
