CES 2018: Garmin Forerunner 645 Music smartwatch, Alexa-integrated Speak Plus dash cam launched

CES 2018 is underway in Las Vegas, and Garmin introduced the Garmin Forerunner 645 Music smartwatch which comes with Garmin Pay contactless payments feature alongside the Garmin Speak Plus that comes integrated with Amazon Alexa and adds a built-in dash cam for in-vehicle entertainment.

Garmin Forerunner 645 Music boasts up to 7 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 5 hours in GPS mode with music. It weighs roughly 42 grams and is the first Forerunner smartwatch to feature a stainless-steel metal bezel. It features an always-on Garmin Chroma Display.

It comes with a built-in GPS and GLONASS, which makes it capable of tracking activities without the need for a phone connection. If you use the watch inside the pool, it will be able to track distance, pace, stroke, and personal records. With Garmin Connect, you can interact with the online fitness community, track workouts, join online challenges, and compete against friends. The watch further allows you to receive and respond to text messages, view social media updates, and check emails. With Garmin Pay, you can make contactless payments using just the smartwatch.

The smartwatch is available with black or cerise band. It is said to be available with a suggested retail price of $449.99 (approximately Rs 28,000). A version without music integration, called simply Forerunner 645, is also available in black or sandstone band at a suggested price of $399.99 (approximately Rs 25,500).

The Garmin Speak Plus with Amazon Alexa is an in-vehicle device that enables hands-free access to music, news, sports, exclusive GPS navigation from Garmin for distraction-free driving. Drivers can activate Garmin turn-by-turn directions to shops, restaurants, and more by simply saying, “Alexa, ask Garmin…”

The integration of dash cam functions like an extra set of eyes in case an incident occurs. The Garmin Speak Plus will automatically record and save files when an incident is detected, and introduces advanced driver assistance features that include Forward Collision and Lane Departure Warnings. The dash cam also offers alerts like Forward Collision Warnings that lets drivers know if they’re too close to the vehicle ahead; Lane Departure Warnings if the driver drifts off the road or into oncoming traffic; and “Go Alerts” to notify drivers when stopped traffic ahead begins to move.

The Garmin Speak Plus features a LED light ring and a bright OLED display showing lane guidance arrows to guide drivers to their destination, and secures to a vehicle’s windshield with a magnetic mount for easy stow and go.

Garmin is offering a two-month free subscription to Amazon Music Unlimited Family Plan. The Garmin Speak Plus will be available starting mid-February at a suggested retail price of $229.99 (approximately Rs 14,500). There will be a special limited time pre-order price of $199.99 (Rs 12,800) is available from January 8 to February 10.
