Nikon is launching a new super-telephoto lens aimed at professional photographers at CES 2018. The company has announced the new AF-S Nikkor 180-400mm f/4E TC 1.4 FL ED VR super-telephoto zoom lens for sports and wildlife photographers.

The Nikkor 180-400mm f/4E is a FX-format lens, and it is Nikon’s first ever built-in teleconverter. As the name reflects, the lens has a focal length of 180-400mm but its built-in 1.4x teleconverter can extend the focal range to 252-560mm when connected to a full-frame camera. When paired with a DX-format DSLR, the focal length is equivalent to 270-600mm and with the teleconverter, it goes to a whopping 378-840mm.

While Nikon’s new lenses offer gigantic range in terms of focal length, the only drawback will be the lose in stop of light and aperture while using the teleconverter. Nikon says it is using magnesium alloy and a fluorite lens element to keep the weight and balance under control. The lens will act as successor to company’s existing Nikkor 200-400mm lens.

“This lens is a great example of how Nikon continues to push the boundaries of innovation and what s possible with pro-level optics and high-end imaging equipment,” said Kosuke Kawaura, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc.

The lens will be ideal for use with cameras like Nikon D5, D500 and D850, which deploy company’s 153-point AF system. The super-telephoto lens uses eight Extra Low Dispersion (ED) elements to improve sharpness and detail of images. It is double the amount of ED elements used by NIKKOR 200-400mm.

The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens will be available at a retail price of $12,399.954 (approximately Rs 800,000) in March 2018.
