The situation in Chennai is dire with heavy rainfall continuously battering the city for the past couple of days. The ensuing floods have brought the city to a standstill and companies and individuals alike are pitching in to help as much as they can.
While the Army and Navy have been called for rescue operations, companies like Airtel too are playing a part in ensuring that communication is maintained for its customers across the city. It has announced free talktime and data for its prepaid customers, as well as extending the bill payment dates for postpaid customers.
Airtel’s press note follows.
The unprecedented rains and floods in Chennai have disrupted normal life and restricted people’s movement from homes. As a small gesture, Airtel has announced the following measures to facilitate communication between Airtel customers and their loved ones:
1. Auto approval of ‘Talk Time’ credit up to Rs 30 for all Airtel prepaid mobile customers
2. Free of cost Credit of 10 minutes of Airtel-to-Airtel calling for prepaid mobile customers with a validity of 2 days
3. Free of cost Credit of 50MB mobile data for Airtel prepaid mobile customers with a validity of 2 days
4. Airtel postpaid and fixed line customers whose bills are due to be paid immediately will get an extended time to make the payment and will experience uninterrupted services
The uninterrupted rains have also resulted in excessive water logging and disruption of essential services in Chennai, thus causing power failures and impacting our services in some regions. We at Airtel are relentlessly working with the local authorities to enable smooth mobile communication for Airtel customers across the city.
